The Daily Mess Can We Really Tune Out The World And Why Should We
1/29/2025
I’m always asking questions. The fun begins when you start researching for answers. Such as… Can we really tune out the world? Then again, why would we want to tune it out? I’m Arroe… I am a daily writer. A silent wolf. I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it’s my morning writing. As a receiver of thoughts and ideas, we as people tend to throw it to the side and deal with it later. When a subject arrives, I dig in. It’s still keeping a journal! By doing the research the picture becomes clearer. This is the Daily Mess…

Celebrating National Puzzle Day With Creator Jodi Jill and Allison Kane From Highlights Magazine
1/29/2025
Highlights has teamed up with the founder of National Puzzle Day, Jodi Jill to get kids and families excited about puzzling together. Whether it's a crossword, jigsaw, trivia word searches, brain teasers or Sudoku, puzzles put our minds to work. Founded in 2002, National Puzzle Day is a way to share enjoyment of puzzles. As a syndicated newspaper puzzle maker and professional quiz maker, Jodi Jill developed classroom lesson plans especially for the observance and the popularity has grown year after year. Partnering this year with Allison Kane, Head of Puzzle Innovation at Highlights, they have developed some fun ways to celebrate Puzzle Day with fun free resources for your puzzle fun. Studies have found that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain. And spending time daily working on puzzles improves memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills. Word searches and crossword puzzles have the obvious benefit of increasing vocabulary and language skills. Sudoku, a puzzle sequencing a set of numbers on a grid, exercises the brain as well. By testing memory and logical thinking, this puzzle stimulates the brain and can improve number skills. Puzzles also offer social benefits. When we work on these brain teasers with someone, we improve our social interactions. Whether we join a group or play with our children, those interactions keep us socially active and teach our children social skills, too. Even working them quietly together provides an opportunity to focus the mind.

Good Or Bad Tis The Chance Of War From Rage To Conquer From Historian Michael Walsh
1/28/2025
Michael Walsh's new book A Rage to Conquer is a journey through twelve of the most important battles in Western history. As Walsh sees it, war is an important facet of every culture - and, for better or worse, our world is unthinkable without it. War has been an essential part of the human condition throughout history, the principal agent of societal change, waged by men on behalf of, and in pursuit of, their gods, women, riches, power, and the sheer joy of combat. In A Rage to Conquer, Walsh brings history to life as he considers a group of courageous commanders and the battles they waged that became crucial to the course of Western history. He looks first at Carl Von Clausewitz, the seminal thinker in the Western canon dealing with war. He then moves on to Achilles at Ilium, Alexander at Gaugamela, Caesar at Alesia, Constantine at the Milvian Bridge, Aetius at the Catalaunian Plains, Bohemond at Dorylaeum and Antioch, Napoleon at Austerlitz, Pershing at St.-Mihiel, Nimitz at Midway and Patton at the Bulge with a final consideration of how the Battle of 9/11 was ultimately lost by the U.S. and what that portends for the future.

Waylon Jennings The Face Of The Outlaws From Music Historian Scott G Shea
1/28/2025
Waylon Jennings. The face of the 1970s Outlaw Country Movement was barely known outside of Nashville when he took the stage at Max’s Kansas City in New York City in, the nightly hangout spot for avant-garde artist Andy Warhol and his Factory brood, in January 1973. This musical hotbed of the glam rock movement, which also helped launch the careers of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Emmylou Harris and others, was the unlikeliest place for a country and western singer, but Waylon passed muster. In his latest article for the Strange Brew, music historian Scott G. Shea breaks down this legendary performance that lifted Waylon into the public consciousness, but perhaps more importantly, lays out the dozen or more years of trial, error and frustration Waylon went through to get to this point.

How Could Something That Loud Come From Someone So Small David Roberts' Protecting Whitney
1/26/2025
David Roberts was Whitney Houston's bodyguard, the real one. Roberts was hired in 1988 for Houston's UK portion of the Moment of Truth world tour. Accustomed to working for diplomats and Fortune 500 clients, Roberts had reservations about working with a pop star. But Houston's heart of gold won him over from the moment they met at Heathrow airport. There's a high bar for those who work in this business: you must be willing to die for your boss. Houston made that easy. Roberts got to travel the globe with one of the most fun-loving and generous souls he'd ever met. His memoir reveals heartwarming anecdotes of life with one of the world's most recognizable stars, including privately shared moments such as the birth of Bobbi Kristina. But there are also shocking and heartbreaking revelations. Roberts was present for some of Houston's most challenging ordeals. And he was helpless as he watched those who claimed to love and support her look the other way because they saw her voice box as a cash machine. His heart was ultimately shattered as he witnessed her succumb to the one threat he could not protect her from: herself.

Your Nose Knows The Book From Jonas Olofsson Clears Things Up With Forgotten Sense
1/25/2025
Long considered our most "beastly" and primal sense, the inner workings of smell have stumped scientists for centuries. Now, in THE FORGOTTEN SENSE, Jonas Olofsson uncovers the sophisticated biological processes that animate our olfactory system, with profound implications for how we perceive the world around us. The sense of smell has long been underappreciated. In a 2012 survey, adults were asked which sense is the most important, and only about two percent chose the sense of smell. In another survey, Americans were asked what is most important: their sense of smell or their pinky toe. The result was a tie. However, attitudes about the sense started to change after the coronavirus pandemic hit. Since 2020, over 300 million people have suffered from an impaired or distorted sense of smell after getting Covid. People began realizing, at last, the importance of this forgotten sense. Indeed, our sense of smell guides our lives far more than our screen-heavy, sight-privileged era would suggest. It animates our experience of food and drink, helps us access memories, and strengthens our intimacy with each other. Drawing from cutting-edge original research, Olofsson shows that not only is our sense of smell extraordinarily sensitive, but also how it engages our brain's full capacity. From the pheromones, environmental signals, and emotions we process with each breath, olfaction makes us the individuals we are. Moreover, smelling is an intellectual exercise, Olofsson argues, one that we have the remarkable capacity to strengthen and, with some effort, even regain after illness.

Dysfunctional Family Dramady From Janna Brooke Wallack In Her Book Naked Girl
1/24/2025
“Naked Girl is a story of the enduring power of love in a family of lunatics,” says Janna Brooke Wallack of her debut novel, a poignant piece of literary fiction. Though not autobiographical, it reads like a memoir. Wallack’s enduring voice and fresh vision evoke the storytelling of masterful novelists like Ann Patchett, Kristin Hannah, and Zadie Smith. Naked Girl is a captivating and moving story that explores the dysfunction of a family, the struggles of 'fitting in' and the power of hope, humor, and imperfect love.
Growing up motherless in 1980's Miami Beach, Sienna and her little brother Siddhartha get by with their charismatic and capricious father, Jackson Jones. When a small windfall relocates them to a condemned mansion on the water, the siblings are forbidden traditional schooling and left to live off the land. As Jackson uses their new home to create a communal cult, the siblings are forced to raise themselves in a carefree, chaotic oasis. Living amidst the vagrant seekers who take up residence in Jackson's utopia, Sienna and Siddhartha strive to protect their unconventional family.
Janna Brooke Wallack writes with warmth, compassion and comic brilliance in Naked Girl, an enthralling debut novel brimming with the adventure, resilience, humor and heartbreak of growing up on the fringe of decency and longing for the unattainable comfort of home.
