Non-Pathologizing Approach To Counselling
Michael Towers
This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.
In this second edition of this textbook the writer has added commentary throughout the textbook as well as added a new chapter on what he is calling "The Protest Language of The Client". This is the 'how-to' of a non-pathologizing approach to counselling. There are over twenty places throughout the textbook that the writer has brought additional commentary to help fill out some of the philosophy and application of these ideas for the reader. The hope of the writer is that this updated version will answer some of the questions that the reader has had in wanting to apply this perspective to their own work with clients.
The writer has constructed this textbook to equip psychotherapists who wish to sit with their clients in non-pathologizing ways. The writer’s hope is that our profession will recognize that continuing to do this work from the framework of the medical model (pathology) is not helpful or healing for our clients. The writer hopes that our profession will begin to take steps to move away from the medical model. This textbook is intended to explain non-pathologizing and offer up a translation to the many different modalities that may have pathologizing elements embedded in their approaches to therapy.
This textbook was researched and written through qualitative research using a meta-synthesis approach to the broad field of psychotherapy and psychology. The presupposition which guided the research is that the general field of counselling is based on the medical model, which by design pathologizes the client. The writer has postulated that the counselling profession needs to move away from the medical model and embrace a non-pathologizing perspective. This textbook provides the framework for a non-pathologizing lens in which all therapists can adapt to their work without requiring training in a new modality or certification.
