„Die Verlobung in St. Domingo“ spielt vor dem Hintergrund der Sklavenaufstände auf Haiti 1803. Ihrem Gefühl zu folgen – dazu ist nur die Mestizin Toni in der Lage. „Die Heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik“ ist der vollständige Titel der eindrucksvollen zweiten Erzählung. Es bleibt offen, ob vier protestantische Brüder, die einen Anschlag auf eine katholische Kirche planen, durch ein Wunder der Cäcilie – Schutzheilige der Musik – oder durch die Macht der Musik selber davon abgekommen sind. "Die Verlobung in St. Domingo“ (The Engagement in St. Domingo) is set during the Haiti slave revolts of 1803. Kleist focuses on the unconditionality of trust that is a necessary fundament of love even if the odds are stacked against it. Only the mestiza Toni is able to follow her feelings. “Die Heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik” (St. Cecilia, or the Power of Music) is the full title of the second story in this recording. Four protestant brothers are planning an attack on a catholic church; whether they abandon their plan due to St. Cecilia, or the power of music itself, is left open for interpretation.
