Nachdem ihr Mann sie und ihre drei Kinder verlassen hat, muß sie zusehen, wie sie zurecht kommt. Entschlossen versucht sie nicht nur einen aus dem Bankrott ihres Mannes übrig gebliebenen Steinbruch zu retten, sondern auch ihre Kinder vor den Lastern der Bürger Seldwylas zu bewahren. Dabei stützt sie sich nicht auf Systeme oder Theorien, sondern wird geleitet von ihrer Menschenkenntnis, dem Sinn für Recht und Unrecht und von der Liebe zu den Kindern. Sarkastisch spielt Keller Frau Amrains nüchterne Erziehung gegen die dumme Großsprecherei der Leute von Seldwyla aus. "Frau Regel Amrain und ihr Jüngster“ (Mrs. Regel Amrain and Her Youngest) is another novella from Gottfried Keller’s collection "Die Leute von Seldwyla“ (The People of Seldwyle). Regula Amrain perfectly fits the description of what would be called a ‘strong woman’ nowadays. After being left by her husband with three children, she has to figure out how to cope with her new situation. Full of resolve she not only tries to save a bankrupt quarry left by her husband, but also to protect her children from the vices of the citizens of Seldwyla. In doing so she relies on theoretical knowledge, her insight into human nature, and the love for her children. Amrain’s clear-headed education is sarcastically juxtaposed with the stupid boastfulness of Seldwyla’s inhabitants which highly contributes to the entertaining nature of this story.
