As she climbed the stone steps to the massive oak door, Evangeline couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. The windows of the manor were dark, their panes reflecting her pale face like hollow eyes. She raised the heavy brass knocker and let it fall three times, the sound reverberating through the silence like gunshots. The door opened almost immediately, as if someone had been waiting just beyond the threshold. A stern-faced woman in black dress and white apron stood before her, her gray hair pulled back in a severe bun that seemed to stretch the skin of her face taut across sharp cheekbones. "Miss Thorne, I presume?" The woman's voice was clipped, her accent refined but cold. "I am Mrs. Blackwood, the housekeeper. You are expected." Evangeline nodded, surprised by the immediate recognition. She had not sent word of her exact arrival time, yet this woman seemed to know precisely when she would appear.
