Atlantis
Josie Hertz
The legend of Atlantis has captivated imaginations for millennia, becoming one of the most enduring and enigmatic myths in human history. It is a tale of a once-powerful civilization, advanced beyond its time, that vanished mysteriously beneath the waves. The myth of Atlantis has been the subject of countless books, articles, documentaries, and theories, with many searching for evidence of its existence or debating its true meaning. Was Atlantis a real place, lost to history? Or is it simply a story invented by the ancient Greeks to convey a moral lesson? This chapter aims to explore the origins of the Atlantis myth, the fascination that continues to surround it, and the various interpretations that have emerged over time.
The story of Atlantis first appears in the works of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, who presented it as a historical account in two dialogues, *Timaeus* and *Critias*, written around 360 BCE. In these texts, Atlantis is described as a powerful and technologically advanced civilization, located beyond the "Pillars of Hercules" (what we now call the Strait of Gibraltar). According to Plato, Atlantis was a large island, rich in resources, and ruled by a confederation of kings. Over time, however, the Atlanteans grew corrupt and decadent, and as a result, they incurred the wrath of the gods. In a single day and night of catastrophe, Atlantis was submerged by the sea, disappearing without a trace.
