The Arvin
Vance Ferton
This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Thieu stood in the humid morning air of Thu Duc Training Center outside Saigon, watching as young Vietnamese recruits struggled through basic combat exercises under the watchful eyes of American advisors. It was March 1955, and Thieu was witnessing the birth of what would become known as the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, or ARVN. The fledgling force bore little resemblance to a professional military organization, lacking equipment, training, and most critically, a clear sense of national purpose. Yet from these humble beginnings would emerge an army that would fight for twenty years, suffer hundreds of thousands of casualties, and ultimately bear the burden of defending a nation that many of its own citizens viewed as illegitimate.
The creation of ARVN emerged from the political chaos that followed the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Accords of 1954. When Vietnam was temporarily divided at the 17th parallel, the newly established Republic of Vietnam in the south faced an immediate military challenge. The Viet Minh had demonstrated their military prowess against the French, and intelligence reports suggested that significant numbers of Communist cadres remained in the south, preparing for future operations. The fledgling government of Ngo Dinh Diem desperately needed armed forces capable of maintaining internal security and defending against potential invasion from the north.
