The KYW Newsradio All-Local: Friday, April 4, 2025 (Morning Edition) The Lumberton Township Committee has voted to censure the Mayor and file an ethics complaint against her. The mayor is accused of driving drunk with her toddler in the backseat on St. Patrick’s Day. Philadelphia’s Democratic City Committee declined to make an endorsement in the District Attorney primary election, scheduled for May 20, but some individual wards are choosing a candidate to endorse. Following a 30 million dollar renovation and two decades of planning, PATCO’s Franklin Square station is open again for the first time since 1979.

Local leaders say American business and consumers will suffer the most after President Trump announced his sweeping tariff plan this week. A minimum 10-percent tariff will be levied on all goods imported into the U-S, but dozens of countries that have tariffs on U-S goods will face higher "reciprocal tariffs." Pennsylvania Democratic Congressman Brendan Boyle calls it the single largest tax increase in the nation's history, and says Americans with the lowest incomes will suffer the most. A teenager wanted for shooting and killing another teen on a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia last month is in police custody -- arrested Thursday afternoon in Montgomery County. Here’s KYW Newsradio's Crime and Justice reporter Kristen Johanson. It was more than a decade in the making, but today PATCO’s Franklin Square station reopened with a mid-day ribbon cutting and a brief charter ride to Camden City Hall and back. KYW Newsradio’s Matt Coughlin was there. The Pennsylvania Senate has passed a bill that would carry stiff penalties for anyone who calls in a fake threat to a school. A temple student has had their Visa revoked by the US State department, according to a statement from University President John Fry. A Philadelphia man who recently pleaded guilty to charges connected with stealing thousands of dollars worth of beef, was hot and killed in Roxbourough last night... and police believe he was targeted. Parents of Bucknell University football player file wrongful death suit against school

The death of a freshman football player after a workout last summer for the Bucknell University football team has prompted a wrongful death lawsuit from his parents. The suit filed in Philadelphia court, against the school and administrators, claims the teen's death was preventable. Attorneys announced the lawsuit during a press conference in Center City. A Bucks County man has filed a lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk, claiming he's owed thousands of dollars for work he did during the 2024 presidential campaign. Philadelphia officials, Wednesday, unveiled a slate of jobs and activities designed to keep the city’s youth busy and, the hope is, safe, this summer. There's new initiative aimed at removing lead from homes in Delaware county.

It was the latest in a string of youth-centered shootings in Philadelphia over the last five days — and happened on the same night as a meeting in response to those incidents. ... The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office is starting a new unit to tackle illegal dumping. ... President Trump's 25 percent tariff on imported automobiles goes into effect Thursday -- a move experts say could raise prices on some cars as much as $10 thousand dollars -- are that dire news appears to have created a dash to buy now. KYW Newsradio's Matt Coughlin has more. An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after a shooting Tuesday evening at a rec center playground in East Germantown. This comes the same night concerned city leaders held an emergency meeting about teen gun violence at rec centers. KYW Newsradio's Vik Raghupathi has the story. The future of two Delaware County hospitals is still up in the air, after bankruptcy hearing adjourned without a resolution. The judge extending the sale deadline until Thursday when lawyers said a deal is still being hammered out. Real ID procrastinators in Pa can expect long waits at PennDOT

Still no resolution in the effort to keep Crozer-Chester and Taylor Hospitals in Delaware County open. A bankruptcy hearing scheduled for Tuesday has adjourned until Thursday. Philadelphia labor leaders marked the fifth anniversary of the city’s “Fair Work Week” law, and urged the city to continue to act on behalf of workers, in the face of anti-labor actions at the federal level. With the federal enforcement deadline a month away, time is running out for people to get a “REAL ID.” And there are plenty of procrastinators in Pennsylvania, as we hear form KYW’s Mike DeNardo. The 20-year-old Bristol Township woman who falsely accused a random stranger of trying to kidnap and rape her, will spend at least 45-days behind bars. It's officially Autism Awareness Month, and a new program in Camden County helps improve interactions between police and people on the autism spectrum.

The first warm weekend of spring saw an uptick of shootings in Philadelphia and officials are pledging to bring the numbers back down. Monday was international Trans Day of Visibility, and here in Philly, the mayor and other city officials raised a trans flag outside city hall to commemorate the occasion. The Phils beat the Rockies 6-1 in their home opener. The new season at the ballpark brings new features, new food and new hope for a World Series win.

A Camden County Kebab shop opened back up Sunday to give out free food to anyone who showed up, after the husband and wife who own it were arrested by ice agents about a month ago. KYW's Vik Raghupathi was there One of the biggest celebrations brought to the U.S by Chinese Immigrants that was first celebrated in Philadelphia's Chinatown was that of a birthday for an ancient Chinese general-turned-god by people he protected. KYW's Nigel Thompson was on hand for another year of the Hoyu folk culture festival... A prime piece of land on the Camden waterfront is going up for sale, and the city has high hopes a big project will continue with Camden's revitalization. KYW's South Jersey Reporter spoke with the Mayor about this new opportunity.

I-76 westbound over Grays Ferry to close this weekend for construction

A South Jersey school janitor who pleaded guilty to tainting cafeteria food with body fluids has been sentenced to eight years in prison. The man accused of stabbing his wife and mother-in-law to death in the basement of a Northeast Philadelphia home last year has pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors. Philadelphia officials are celebrating the completion of 19 new homes in Kensington, funded and built through a program called "Turn the Key." A joint senate and assembly select committee held a special hearing in Trenton to get answers on what is driving up utility bills for New Jersey residents.

Newly released body camera video shows the moments a Burlington County mayor was arrested on charges she was driving drunk while her son was in the car. There was an emotional moment during a Philadelphia city council hearing when member Kendra Brooks asked for help finding her dog, Buzz. Unfortunately, there was no one at the Portal in Dublin when the one in Philly was reopened this morning.

Mixed verdict in perjury trial of retired Philadelphia detectives accused of lying about DNA evidence

The KYW Newsradio All-Local on Friday, Aug. 7, 2025 (morning edition): New police bodycam video shows the moment that Lumberton, New Jersey, mayor Gina LaPlaca was arrested for drunk driving on St. Patrick's Day. Her young son was in a car seat in the back seat. She had just picked him up from day care. Around 5:40 that evening, officers confront her at her house, where they tell her someone was concerned about her erratic driving. They ask her about her passenger side mirror, which looks severely damaged. She eventually admits that she hit something. They have her perform a field sobriety test, where she stumbles a couple of times. They also discover a water bottle in the car that a police officer identifies by smell as alcohol. She was arrested and taken to the Lumberton Police Station, where the case against her was explained before she was eventually released. Locals are calling on LaPlaca to resign. The town cannot forcibly remove her without a recall election. A split verdict in the perjury case against three long-retired Philadelphia homicide detectives accused of lying under oath during the retrial of a man convicted of rape and murder. The Philadelphia School District will have to dip into its reserve fund to balance the budget next year. One game down, 161 to go. It’s a long season, but many Phillies fans are already thinking about the playoffs.
