Corsets were effective but so tight that they caused internal harm to women. They also induced atrophy in a woman's lower back.
Corsets were so constricting that ladies often collapsed while wearing them!
But here's the twist...
It was thought that fainting while wearing a corset was a good thing! It was seen as a sign of excellent breeding.
