Episode 201: A Pre-Mortem Post-Mortem?

4/1/2025
What a difference a week makes. In the short span of seven days, the Bucks have sustained a four game losing streak, lost Damian Lillard indefinitely to a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis, and look set to be in a fight for their lives for the East's fifth seed. With instability plaguing the team on the court, Kyle, Adam, and Riley take a step back and assess where things go from here. Is this simply the reality of a team reaching the end of its competitive cycle in the most mundane ways possible? They discuss that, plus rapid fire questions, a review of "Tombstone" and weekly predictions!

Episode 200: Sitting Courtside

3/25/2025
In the 200th (!!!) edition of Deer Diaries, we were pleased to be joined by Gale Klappa. Gale is the host of the Bucks+ podcast Courtside with Gale Klappa where he interviews Bucks players, coaches, members of the front office, and figures from the wider basketball world on a weekly basis. Klappa is a longtime fixture in Milwaukee, an avid basketball fan, and also a minority owner of the team. After an intro into his background, we chat about the continuing ripple effects of the trade deadline moves, Gary Trent Jr.'s late resurgence, and Milwaukee's late-game offense. Then, it is on to rapid fire before wrapping with our newest miscellaneous segment, Gallivanting With Gale.

Episode 199: Reaching a New Normal

3/18/2025
Back from his own version of, "One, two, three, Cancún!" Kyle Carr makes his triumphant return to the podcast stage with Jack on this edition of Deer Diaries. And just in time for the Bucks to have a pedestrian week! They begin by discussing the possible big man rotation headaches Doc Rivers will need to tackle - complicated in the short-term by Jericho Sims' thumb surgery. Then it is on to refereeing challenges Giannis and Dame will need to continue navigating. Finally, they chat about who Milwaukee should prioritize re-signing this summer before obliterating (editor's verbiage) the restive Middleton/Kuzma debates. Things are wrapped up with a NBL Finals capper and predictions as the team begins its West Coast road trip!

Episode 198: Solidly Second Class?

3/11/2025
Will the Milwaukee Bucks ever be able to break through the next tier of the Eastern Conference contenders? Riley and Jack recorded fresh off the Bucks fourth defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers to take stock of the team's limitations. Can an iso-heavy offense do just enough in the playoffs to get by? Has Taurean Prince proved himself to be a worthy starting two guard stopgap? Is there a shortfall in team smarts, talent, Xs and Os, or a little bit of everything? We chat all that, plus rapid fire questions, we put a bow on the 2024-2025 NBL season, and predictions!

Episode 197: They Found Their Footing

3/3/2025
With the trade deadline in the rearview mirror and the stretch run of the NBA season underway, the Milwaukee Bucks look to have found their way. Kyle, Adam, and Riley discuss what the Bucks are up to that has them winning often and against reasonable competition. All that, plus rapid fire questions, a review of Court of Gold, and weekly predictions!

Thanks For Everything, Khris

2/5/2025
What had once seemed fantasy is now a reality: Khris Middleton is a Milwaukee Buck no more. It'd only be appropriate to memorialize his place in franchise history and what he meant as a pillar of the team over a decade-plus career in Milwaukee. Scorer, creator, and even a stout defender and iron man (82 starts in 2017-2018!), Khris has given us plenty of great memories which we enjoyed talking about tonight. Some chat about the trade that brought his tenure to an end followed, including some live updates as the night wore on. Did the Bucks "win" the trade that saw a foundational piece depart? Well, how many teams do?

Episode 196: Wherefore Art Thou, Bobby?

2/3/2025
The Milwaukee Bucks forever road trip finally came to an end before another loss at home to the Grizzlies; so what did we learn? That Bobby Portis is the most important Buck of all time, perhaps ever. Kyle, Adam, and Riley chat about the 1-3 effort out west and what other flaws, if any, this series of bumps in the road revealed about the team. Plus: rapid fire questions, Kyle reviews 1998's Rush Hour, and we make our weekly predictions.

Episode 195: Trade Deadline Bonanza

1/27/2025
With the NBA trade deadline looming and the Bucks flitting in and out of the rumor mill, Kyle, Adam, and Riley re-united for the first time in a long time to break it all down. Why is it nigh impossible for the Bucks to find a simple trade partner? Is it realistic to think Khris Middleton could be moved in a deal? And what level of swap would need to happen for our hosts to drop an "emergency podcast"? They answer all that and more, plus rapid fire questions and weekly predictions!

Episode 194: Mixed Messaging

1/14/2025
On this edition of Deer Diaries, Kyle and Adam review a Bucks week featuring some impressive wins leavened by a very lopsided loss to one of the top teams in the East. They wonder if the offense is even making other teams adjust and the state of Giannis and Dame's chemistry Milwaukee's defense is under the microscope again after the Knicks loss, and they wonder what will happen with Khris Middleton’s bench shift? Things are wrapped up with rapid fire questions, Kyle bemoans Despicable Me 4, capped with predictions for the four-game home stand. Also, our thoughts are with all of those impacted by the California wildfires. As always, there is so much more that is bigger than basketball.

Ep. 193: Tripping to the New Year

12/30/2024
It wouldn't be the Milwaukee Bucks if they didn't keep it interesting, right? As they fight the flu and a 1-2 week, Kyle, Jack, and Riley get together to chat about the nature of the losses. Are we seeing Milwaukee's depth stretched to its absolute limits? Is it a question of talent or execution, or both? And where exactly do the Bucks and their stars rank when it comes to "clutch time"? All that plus rapid fire, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 review you've been patiently waiting for, a despondent update from Adelaide, and weekly predictions!

Jack and Riley got together to discuss the team's triumph in the league's premier exhibition match to determine just how much it matters. Could its value as a measuring stick against an elite Western Conference team outshine concerns of player overuse? Was the subsequent road game to the Cleveland Cavaliers a schedule loss? And what does it mean that Bobby Portis dropped 34 on Washington? All that plus some Wisconsin Herd talk, rapid fire, a report from the NBL, and weekly predictions!

Episode 188: 10 Game Sample-Size Blues

11/12/2024
Well... this is a bummer. Heading into the 2024-2025 season with championship aspirations, the Milwaukee Bucks have instead bumbled their way to a 2-8 start. Kyle, Jack, and Riley talk through early season observations with particular focus on what, if anything, Giannis Antetokounmpo can still give, how to never play Bobby Portis or Pat Connaughton again, and a defense that has no concrete fix in sight. All that, plus rapid fire, Kyle's review of Old Dads, Jack's latest report from the NBL, and weekly predictions!

Kris is 50% of the duo hosting Hear District (with his father, Marques Johnson, making up the other half) as part of the Bucks+ audio program network - on their weekly program they host guests from across the organization and NBA to discuss the Bucks, the league, and basketball in general. We begin his appearance with a breakdown of Bucks-Celtics and our early season encouragements and concerns. Then, it is on to a way-too-early temperature check on all the players in Milwaukee's rotation (thus far) and the team's offense and defense. Finally, we close with a local's where-to guide of Los Angeles, covering ground from the city's best restaurants to its best music venues. Thank you for joining, Kris!
