Jackson Merrill had himself a day hitting TWO homers off Zack Wheeler as the Phillies fall to the Padres, 5-4! Zack Wheeler allowed four runs on six hits and one walk over his six innings of work striking out six. Wheeler has certainly had better days, but his big Achilles’ heel in this game was Jackson Merrill. The Padres center fielder had not hit a home run since May 27th, but today, he took Wheeler deep TWICE! Both homers came on fast balls. Merrils’ second home run, tied the game at four in the 6th inning and took the chance away for Wheeler’s 15th quality start of the season. When Wheeler's night was done, Tanner Banks came in and allowed a pair of one out hits, then he gave way to Jordan Romano who surrendered a sac fly RBI to Manny Machado that was the difference in the game. Edmundo Sosa replaced an injured Alec Bohm and Sosa came up with a big hit in the 5th inning. Phillies bats can’t get the big hit to back Ranger Suarez as they fall to the Padres 4-2. The Phillies had a great chance in the 5th inning with the bases loaded and two outs, when Bryce Harper stepped to the play, but the slugger grounded the first pitch to first base to end the threat. They got another huge chance with the bases loaded and one out in the 8th, but Nick Castellanos swung at ball four, that would have walked in a game tying run, instead, he hit a dribbler back to Jason Adam who flipped home to get Trea Turner before he crossed the plate. The Philadelphia Phillies DOMINATED the Giants 13-0 to avoid getting swept out of San Francisco. This season, there has been the elite version of Jesus Luzardo and the awful version of Jesus Luzardo. Today, he was ELITE! Seven scoreless innings of three-hit baseball, striking out seven and walking only one. He improves to 8-5 on the year. As the score would indicate, the floodgates opened for the Phillies’ offense. First it was, an RBI single by JT Realmuto in the 2nd inning, Then in the 4th, Bryce Harper added a solo homer, his first since June 3rd and his first in his last nine games. Nick Castellanos recorded an RBI single in the 6th, followed by a Max Kepler sac fly RBI. Going into the 8th inning, the Phillies enjoyed a 4-0 lead. Then the Phillies EXPLODED for a SEVEN run 8th inning. Kyle Schwarber came up with the big hit, a three-run homer, his 29th of the season. For Harper who came into today batting, .167 since making his return, a 4-for-6 day with a homer and three doubles was a much needed statline. The 9th inning wastes a solid night for so many other Phillies. Taijuan Walker made his first start since May 30th. He threw four innings allowing one run on a check swing RBI single by Dominic Smith in the 2nd inning. Otto Kemp had himself a day. First he came up with a great diving play in the 4th to prevent a one-out baserunner. Then in the 6th snapped a Phillies 0-26 stretch with RISP, smacking a game-tying two-out double to left bringing in Alec Bohm. Kyle Schwarber, who had an ill-advised stolen base attempt in the 4th, came up with a little redemption in the 7th inning. The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the San Francisco Giants, 3-2 on a night that featured a WHOLE LOT OF AWFUL! Phillies bats when 0-for-6 in the game and are now 0-for-their-last-24 overall. The only run they squeezed out came on a wild pitch in the 5th inning that allowed Bryson Stott to score from third. Orion Kerkering pitched the 8th with the score tied at one. He gave up a hit, hit two batters and was charged for two runs that were the difference in the game. Throw Kerkering was wild, home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi had one of the worst nights in recent memory calling balls and strikes. Cuzzi called several pitches, well outside the zone, STRIKES. Bryce Harper seemed to be a favorite target of Cuzzi's to call pitches against. Then with Kekerking on the mound, Cuzzi called three straight pitches inside the zone, BALLS! Each one would have been for strike three. Instead, a full count and a base hit. All that awful goes into wasting Cristopher Sanchez great start. Sanchy got no decision despite throwing seven innings of one-run baseball. Sanchez struck out 8 all by way of the change-up. He also allowed seven hits and issued just one walk, his first in a month. Zack Wheeler threw a complete game one-hitter as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds, 3-1. Wheeler's only mistake came in the 5th inning on a 3-1 fastball to former Phillie Austin Hays who loaded up and smacked it 377 feet to right field for the first (and only) blemish on Wheelers day. Kyle Schwarber took Wheeler off the hook in the bottom of the 5th with an RBI single. Then in the bottom of the 8th, with the score still tied at one and Wheeler in danger of not recording a win despite his outstanding efforts. Bryson Stott made sure his starter got the "W." Phillies beat the Reds, 5-1 thanks to another solid start from Ranger Suarez and three homers by the Phils' offense! Ranger Suarez was done after just five innings of work allowing just one run on a solo homer by Will Benson in the 5th. Suarez surrendered 5 hits and issued two walks while striking out six. He threw 80 pitches in the outing. After the game Rob Thomson said Suarez was on an 85 pitch limit today, that's why he was pulled early. Despite the solid start, Suarez streak of quality starts was snapped at 10-straight games. He was just the 9th Phillies pitcher to do that since 1901. All five of the Phillies runs came by way of the long ball! Edmundo Sosa got the offense going in the 5th inning with a solo homer that tied the game at one and took Suarez off the hook. Then In the 6th, Alec Bohm put the Phillies in front with a two-run homer to center. The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the San Diego Padres in GAME ONE of their Split Doubleheader, 6-4. This one felt OVER before it began as Phillies' starter Mick Abel allowed five runs in the 2nd inning walked four in the frame including two with the bases loaded. Then he allowed a bases clearing double to Manny Machado. Abel was done after that. In total he lasted just 1.2 innings allowing five runs on two hits and five walks. Kyle Schwarber plated the Phillies' first run of the game in the 6th inning with his 26th homer of the season. Then the Phillies scored two more in the 7th. Edmundo Sosa brought J.T. Realmuto home with a triple then scored on a passed ball. Then in the 9th, Brandon Marsh singled home J.T. Realmuto. Trea Turner followed by putting Marsh on 3rd with a single. Marsh was originally ruled out, but the call was overturned when replay showed Manny Machado never made the tag.
