As Christians, there’s always the temptation to look for Jesus… plus. Jesus plus rules. Jesus plus some mystical or spiritual experience. Jesus plus physical disciplines. Most people in the Western world have heard of Jesus. They know that He was a teacher. Probably a very insightful teacher. Who is in charge of this world? Depending on your beliefs, you might point to political rulers. Maybe cultural influencers. Some feel that the environment is the ultimate arbiter. When you look around at the world, there’s certainly no end to the things we need. We have poverty. We have crime. There’s enmity between nations. Marriages and families struggle. You’ve probably heard the phrase “blessings in Christ.” But what does that actually mean? Is it about having health, wealth, and happiness? And is it something only for some Christians? If you were to be perfectly honest, how much would you say you “desire” to pray? If you’re like a lot of people, it’s something you know you have to do, but it doesn’t seem to be as interesting or exciting as a lot of other things surrounding you. When people think of “the church” today, what do they usually perceive? Some people will see it as a political organization: some churches are red; some are blue. As Christians, we know that we are “saved” by Christ. But what does that really mean? Is it something only for after we die, or does it have any benefit for our earthly life?
