His mother, Denise Wright frequented the club scene at a young age and like Terry was discovered to be a dancer with exceptional talent. Terry attended Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn and developed quite a reputation for his dancing. At age 21, he began his career as a professional dancer, and has gone on to travel the world. He gained more notoriety after becoming a member of “Elite Force,” one of the most influential dance crews of all time. They are recognized for pioneering the face of true hip hop dance. Brooklyn Terry is a phenomenal Hip-Hop and house dancer. Most people know him for his impeccable footwork as a house dancer. His rhythmic patterns exhibit skills like that of a foot musician. He has appeared on television and traveled nationally and internationally with celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Will Smith, Lil Kim, Da Brat, and the late Whitney Houston. Terry has successfully popularized his organic styles of dance in both the underground and mainstream communities. He has remained true to his underground roots maintaining the utmost respect of his peers. In this conversation, Kapela talks about what it's like being a Senegalese growing up in France and discovering music and dance which forever changed his life. We talked about his origins in dance especially under the guidance of Babson (Wanted Posse) and the education/worldviews he discovered from this culture. Kapela started Breaking In 1999 and his unique musicality meant that he was noticed during toprock and footwork battles at big events such as Street Star in Sweden and the Black Sea Contest in Russia. In 2004 he joined the International Dance Academy (IDA) and during his 3 years there, he grew artistically and technically. A major turning point in Kapela’s personal and artistic life was when he met Babson from Wanted Posse and discovered House Dance. With all of his experience and training, Kapela innovates by mixing together the all of his influences to create is renowned style. Kapela has competed and judged worldwide and is undoubtedly one of France’s greatest exports. In addition to his dance abilities, Kapela is also a rising DJ and holds a residency in one of France's legendary clubs at Djoon in Paris. A conversation with the legendary Buddha Stretch on the innerworkings of Hip Hop as a culture, dance, how music and community are foundational. We talked about the need to lose the murder mentality, the degradation of the artform without standards in place, the intersection of culture appropriation vs appreciation and who is a guest or resident in this culture. Other topics included his time working with Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Will Smith in the entertainment industry. He also shared insights into the complexities within dance battles. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Buddha Stretch was influenced by his dad Emilio Austin, Sr. His Dad danced as a youth and provided Stretch with discipline, inspiration, support and motivation, and remained by his side to guide him throughout his career. This foundation carries Stretch, a father himself, throughout his personal and professional career today. Stretch heavily impacted the dance world by bridging the gap between what was termed, Ol’ Skool and New Skool. His dance style, known as Freestyle Hip-Hop, draws from all aspects of Hip-Hop culture, music and dance. These moves during the early days of music videos helped to launch the popularity of dance in this medium, as well as live shows. His first video was with Eric B & Rakim, Eric B for President. He met the members of his first dance crew, Mop Top, at a music video audition each one had booked for Diana Ross, Working Overtime. They began to hang out at New York’s night spot, The Tunnel, and later formed their crew. Stretch later formed a crew called Elite Force who appeared in documentaries, music videos, live shows and in countless projects overseas. His first choreography job was for Joeski Love (Pee Wee Dance) and went on to work with the likes of Rosie Perez, Will Smith in the Men In Black and Miami videos; Michael Jackson’s Remember The Time video (his most memorable experience) and more. A conversation with Dr. Leila Molahan on her research into the effects of meditation on children, how this transformative practice is integral to developing intuition and cultivating Self-Knowledge. She also shares some of the ways that meditation has been repackaged by the West, deviated from it's original intent and reduced to a performance enhancing tool. Getting back to the roots of meditation, a practice to connect the practicioner deeper to themselves within the context of the greater whole and not just a tool to be used for increased productivity. Dr. Leila Molahan was born in Manhattan, NY and received her early education in the borough of Queens. She was shaped by the ethnic diversity of the city she lived in and its urban landscape. She later attended Tulane University in New Orleans where she majored in Ancient Religions as well as photography. As a freelance photojournalist, she received special acknowledgement for her insight into race, gender and cultural studies which allowed her to carve a special niche in the city as one of the first female journalists of color who specialized in urban music and dance culture. After receiving her Masters degree at Louisiana Tech in Education she began her research into the area of children’s spirituality. Most recently, she studied meditation and contemplative practice as a pathway to Self-Knowledge in a sample of historically marginalized students for her doctoral research at the University of Louisiana. Through her study, she helped develop a curriculum for students that emphasizes ancestral healing and cultural identity, self-love and awareness. Her research ultimately reinforces the radical act of seeing oneself as a transformative source of limitless knowledge and power. Leila Molahan’s passion is helping at-risk youth and marginalized communities. Her focus in this field parallels her own decade long journey of sobriety and working toward accessibility and equity for all on the road to recovery while discovering one’s own spiritual path along the way. A conversation with Cricket on his origins into dance and the intricacies of House Dance/Music and culture. We discussed the drivers and business of battles and contests, where competitions and clubs fall into the mix, and what happens when you identify with winning. Cricket also recounts his first time ever battling Step Fenz & Shan S! Cricket shares some of his keys to advancement, the importance of finding community and life mentors and details all the people that helped him on his journey. James “Cricket” Colter is well-known around the world as a respected professional street dancer. In addition, he is a well-versed visual artist (sequential art, children’s book illustrations, etc) and director. Cricket is a part of the “Step-Fenz” dance crew, a New York based dance group that is known for its mix of Breakin’, Freestyle Hip-Hop, House Dance. He also is a founding member of the Hip-Hop theater company Rennie Harris Pure Movement (RHPM) and worked with the company for over 16 years. During his time with RHPM, he was involved teaching and performing all over the world, and was the lead in the outreach portion of Puremovement’s education programs. In addition, he performed in Rennie Harris’ Bessie award winning multidisciplinary hip hop theater presentation, “Rome and Jewels.” Cricket also hosted the “House Head Session” in NYC, a practice session for Houseand Freestyle dancers for 10 years. His own work includes: teaching at hip hop festivals world wide, one of which includes the famous Bates Dance Festival held annually in Maine; featured dancer in television commercials, and the successful Disney movie "Step Up 2 the Streets; music videos for recording artist, Boys II Men, KRS-1, Will Smith, Eve, Avil Lavigne, Fall Out-Boy, and was the host of MTV Japans "Dreamers" television show. Cricket constantly finds himself next to movement experts that push the envelope of dance. He has toured and worked with the likes of Bill "Crutch Master" Shannon, Urban tap dancer Tamango Van Cayseeleas and theatrical word smith and dancer from London Jonzi D. Cricket. He has produced and directed various dance pieces, in Philadelphia, and New York City, and worked as director and artistic director on the London based production company Independace’s show “Heroes,” a production which he also did costume design on. Cricket’s artistic mission is to push the limits of the various movements that exist in Hip-Hop and in other contemporary dance forms, buy blending various art forms in order to tell a viable story on the concert dance stage, and rid the stigma that Hip-Hop it is merely an athletic form of dance that can only be performed in a showcase setting. Cricket believes through Hip Hop complex stories can be told and the boundaries of theater can be pushed by adding the urban/hip hop aesthetic to costume design, set design, soundscapes, etc. To this end, Mr. Colter has recently founded his own company “Crazy-Natives” to accomplish the goal.
