Today, expert knowledge is so highly valued that we learn to lead first as the expert whose mastery of the details helps teams solve problems. These leaders are admired and respected. This trend goes against the conventional business school training for the “general manager.” However, as the scope of the leadership role expands, expert leaders find themselves in a role where others know more, details are no longer so accessible and decisions are made without a full understanding. This transition is perhaps the hardest transition of all. Our best experts are unprepared for a different world with different rules. The old ways no longer work. Now what to do?
