8th annual CNIB Nova Scotia Open Goalball Tournament

Blind Sports Nova Scotia hosts the 8th annual CNIB Nova Scotia Open Goalball Tournament, the only competition of its kind east of Montreal. Saturday & Sunday, October 26 & 27, 2024, blind athletes from across North America gather in Halifax at LeMarchant St. Thomas School to compete in the only Paralympic sport created specifically for athletes who are blind and visually impaired. AMI presents the Silver Medal and Gold Medal games featuring teams from Ontario and Nova Scotia. Play by play with Alex Smyth and Jennie Bovard. Vision Health Conference 2024

On Tuesday, May 21st 2024, Jacob Shymanski and Kelly MacDonald attended the Vision Health Conference at the Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa, Ontario. This year’s theme was the role of artificial intelligence in vision health. The conference provided a wide view of the potential uses of AI in the field of vision health, and focused on technologies that are the most developed and most likely to be used in the short term. The conference was hosted by Keith Gordon, a senior researcher for the Canadian Council of the Blind. Attendees were also welcomed by Jim Tokos, the President of the Canadian Council of the Blind. The first speaker was Dr. Jutta Treviranus, who provided an overview of both the risks and opportunities that AI poses. Then, Dr. Delan Jinapriya spoke about AI in the field of Ophthalmology and explained how it could be used to diagnose glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. The final speaker was Jason Fayre, who spoke about how AI is already being used in the creation of accessible devices. To finish the conference, all three speakers were involved in a question and answer section. Both virtual and in-person attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions to the panelists. 2024 CNIB Guide Dogs with Purpose Gala

On April 20th, 2024, Andy Frank hosted the live broadcast of the annual CNIB Guide Dogs with Purpose Gala. It was a formal event from the Delta Hotel in Regina which raised money for the training of guide dogs in Saskatchewan. The evening included a live description of the guide dog red carpet, a speech from Guide Dog owner Louise Michaud, the Assistant Deputy Minister, Housing; President & CEO Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and an interview with AMI podcaster Becki Zerr and her son Bennett! More specifically, we asked: 1. What does the IDPD mean to you? 2. What are steps society can take to tangibly improve the lives of persons with disabilities? This is an audio collage, of sorts, showcasing nuanced approaches and differing opinions people within the community have towards the IDPD. Work needs to be done but it’s important to recognize the work that has been done as well as maintain an optimistic outlook.

Great Valentine Gala 2023

The Great Valentine Gala, held every February in Toronto, is the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP)’s No. 1 fundraising event. It has raised over $35 million and has become a glittering showcase for the unheralded achievements of Canadians of all abilities. In 2023, the Gala was hosted by Suhana Meharchand, and featured the presentation of numerous awards issued to individuals and organizations. AMI-audio presented the Gala live to air on February 11, 2023. It is hosted by Dave Brown and Greg Westlake of AMI-tv, and Andy Frank of AMI-audio.
