Reunion: Leadership and the Longing to Belong

1/20/2025
Leaders are increasingly challenged to understand how to respond to a polarized world. They are grappling with addressing division while embracing otherness. But to create welcoming environments in which each member feels recognized and comfortable being their whole selves at work, we must face our own need for belonging -- one that is often unmet. In REUNION: Leadership and the Longing to Belong (HarperBusiness; Nov. 14, 2023), executive coach Jerry Colonna urges leaders to consider the ways they have been complicit in, and benefitted from, conditions they say they’d like to change, and shows them how to create new systems of inclusion for everyone. In today’s complex and divisive world, it is only through radical self-inquiry, a concept explored in Colonna’s first book Reboot, that leaders can forge systemic belonging for everyone. Jerry Colonna is a leading executive coach who uses the skills he learned as a venture capitalist to help entrepreneurs. He is a co-founder and CEO of Reboot, the executive coaching and leadership development company, host of the Reboot Podcast, and author of REUNION: Leadership and the Longing to Belong (HarperBusiness; Nov. 14, 2023) and Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up (HarperBusiness, 2019). He draws on his wide variety of experiences to help clients design a more conscious life and make needed changes to their careers to improve their performance and satisfaction. Previously he was a partner with JPMorgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of JP Morgan Chase. He joined JPMP from Flatiron Partners, which he launched in 1996 with partner, Fred Wilson. Flatiron became one of the most successful, early-stage investment programs in the New York City area. He lives on a farm in Longmont,

Habits of a Peacemaker - Practical tools to change our potentially toxic conversations into healthy dialogues

1/13/2025
In Habits of a Peacemaker: 10 Habits to Change Our Potentially Toxic Conversations into Healthy Dialogues (Shadow Mountain Publishing; 9/3/24) Steven T. Collis offers a practical, humbling path to better, more genuinely productive, and empathetic conversations. As a law professor specializing in the First Amendment and a leading expert on civil discourse, Collis has built his career navigating some of the most divisive issues facing our world today. He’s bridged gaps between people across the ideological spectrum: academics, diplomats, foreign and domestic judges, high schoolers, religious leaders, college and graduate students, devout churchgoers, devoted atheists and agnostics, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those who believe in traditional notions of sexuality—essentially, people who are perhaps the most poised to disagree with each other. Habits of a Peacemaker shows us many of the keys to creating civil discourse between theoretically opposing parties. These include reframing disagreement as an opportunity to learn rather than an argument to win, recognizing our intellectual limitations, acknowledging our basic biases, and so much more. By following these habits, we can engage in dialogue about difficult topics while simultaneously building and strengthening relationships. Steven T. Collis is an author and law professor at the University of Texas- Austin. A former research fellow at Stanford Law School, he is the founding faculty director of the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center and is one of the nation’s leading thought leaders on the First Amendment and civil discourse. He regularly speaks to major media outlets and lay audiences all over the globe on those issues. He is the author of four books, most recently Habits of a Peacemaker

Expanding Your Influence in the Workplace

9/30/2024
Jesus D. “Jesse” Hernandez Jr is the Founder of Depth Builder LLC, who helps leaders deepen their communication skills and build trust through their improvement initiatives. Jesse does this by shining a light on their blind spots, and teaching them how to adjust their leadership approach to ensure “buy in” amongst their employees. Experiencing construction business problems from the perspective of an installer, a field leader, a trade contractor, a General Contractor and an owner’s Rep has helped Jesse understand that we are more alike than we are different. Being a witness to people discovering their agency and leaders contributing to that is what brings him fulfillment. His path in the professional space and 7+ years of sobriety has helped Jesse meet people where they are at and get them unstuck. The key is in serving others and helping folks leverage their influence and formal authority in making the work better for the men and women who are doing the work. Jesse’s 5S in Relationships Livestream Experiment revealed to him that there is a gap in connection amongst construction professionals. This led him to co-author the book Lean & Love 5S Love Letters and co-host The NoBS with Jen and Jess Podcast, where he is having imperfect conversations about the human side of work. These efforts helped Jesse appreciate the power of vulnerability. Jesse has also written Becoming the Promise You are Intended to Be where readers can find glimpses of themselves in the stories he shares and discover the path to living up to the promise they are Intended to fulfill. Seeing the impact these works are having have lit a fire in Jesse to help people practice vulnerability and deepen their connection with the folks they spend the most time with. Jesse wants to serve our listeners with the idea that focusing on the person in front of us is the best way to Expand their Influence. The key to this is listening and more specifically asking interested questions. He wants to introduce the listeners two a couple of cheat codes (air time & first response) that they can put into practice immediately.
