438. Sulpician Abbot Fenelon

9/10/2025
Appointed governor by the Society of Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, Francois-Marie Perrot clashed with Governor General of New France Frontenac in 1675. When Sulpician Abbot François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon (1641–1679) intervened on behalf of Perrot, Frontenac referred the matter the Court of King Louis XIV in France. Fénelon, a French Sulpician priest who was an eloquent preaching missionary in New France was eventually forbidden to remain in Canada due to his political interference and ultimately withdrew from the Sulpicians. The mission he founded a mission in the Kenté (Quinte) region of Lake Ontario left no trace, but his name is remembered at Fenelon Falls. He died at the age of 38, with his final whereabouts unknown. 437. Governor Perrot of Montreal

Francois-Marie Perrot (1644-1691) was appointed governor of Montreal by a royal commission in 1670 until 1684. He married Intendant Jean Talon’s niece and through his influence obtained the appointment as governor from the Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, succeeding Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. In 1672, he was granted the island that now bears his name (Île Perrot to the west of Montreal Island) as a seignory. Later, Perrot was the governor of Acadia from 1684-87. Soldier, Navigator, Geographer

Throughout his life, Samuel de Champlain was a loyal Catholic soldier. As a young man, he learned to fight with the firearms of his time, acquiring this practical knowledge when serving with the army during the later stages of France's religious wars involving the Holy Catholic League in Brittany from 1594 to 98. During this time he attained the rank of Captain. His soldiering skills, along with his talents as a Navigator and Geographer, would later serve him well during his many adventures in North America. Champlain in Mexico

In his early thirties, experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. Along the way, he took detailed notes, wrote an illustrated report on what he learned on this trip, and gave this secret account—entitled ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico 1599 to 1601’—to his King, Henry the fourth, who rewarded Champlain with an annual pension. Frontenac (1622-98) was a French aristocrat, soldier and Governor General of New France in North America. He established a number of Forts on the shores of the Great Lakes and engaged in a series of battles against the English and the Iroquois Confederacy for control of the fur trade.
