Neighbors. The people you wave to while mowing the lawn or ask to borrow a teaspoon of sugar from every once in a while. Did they welcome you to the neighborhood with a freshly baked pie? What is your relationship with your neighbors? Was there a time when knowing your neighbors was particularly helpful? How CA's Latino/a politics are playing out amidst ICE activity and protests and the history that got us here

6/16/2025
Sen. Alex Padilla, the senior U.S. senator representing California, was forcibly removed from a news conference in Los Angeles on Thursday as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was addressing reporters. Noem and other federal law enforcement officials were briefing the public on recent ICE operations in Los Angeles when Padilla, who is a Democrat, spoke up from the crowd to ask questions and was removed, videos of the incident show. Padilla's office said he was in L.A. to perform Congressional oversight of the federal government’s immigration operations, according to a statement. Images showed him being handcuffed on the floor outside a short time later. Sen. Padilla is California's first Latino U.S. Senator. California's Latino/a population is one of the communities most affected by the recent ICE presence. But it is also the Latino/a community who helped President Trump win his second term. Today on AirTalk, we discuss the history of California's Latino politics, how the Latino/a vote has become such a powerful cohort in the state, and how that is playing out amidst ICE arrests and protests. Joining us is Gustavo Arellano, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times.

Protesters clash with law enforcement in downtown LA. Hundreds march against Trump's immigration sweeps

6/9/2025
Protesters clash with law enforcement in downtown LA. Hundreds march against Trump's immigration sweeps Federal immigration sweeps that began Friday in Los Angeles have prompted anger, protest and resistance from onlookers and immigrant rights groups that have braced for this type of action for months. Over the weekend, tensions continued to rise between state and local authorities and Trump administration officials, who said they were calling up the National Guard in response to what the White House said were "violent mobs" attacking "ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles." Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday afternoon formally asked that President Donald Trump rescind the deployment, which he had ordered Saturday. At an evening news conference, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass said she supported Newsom's request, adding that she had tried to dissuade the Trump administration from sending in soldiers. With files from LAist. Read the full story here. SoCal regulators vote today on phase-out plan of gas-powered appliances

6/6/2025
Southern California air regulators are voting today on two proposed regulations to curb smog and lessen pollution that’s heating up the planet. For nearly two years, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, which regulates air quality across much of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, has been working to update rules to phase out gas furnaces and water heaters. A recent data analysis by climate think tank Rocky Mountain Institute found that gas-burning equipment in homes and businesses in Greater L.A. produces seven times more smog-forming pollution than the region’s power plants. Environmental advocates say the rules have been watered down significantly and should be stricter, while the gas industry and its partners say the rules will strain the power grid and raise costs for consumers. Today on AirTalk, LAist climate and environment reporter Erin Stone, deputy managing attorney and director of the Right To Zero campaign at Earthjustice Adrian Martinez, and President of the Los Angeles County Business Federation, David Englin, join Larry to discuss the differing arguments in play around these rules. A look at NASA’s reliance on private space firms as President Trump and Elon Musk feud

6/6/2025
Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s relationship imploded this week like a star going supernova as the two took to social media to take jabs at each other. At stake are the future of Musk’s companies, including electric car company Tesla and rocket manufacturer SpaceX, both of which receive government subsidies or contracts. President Trump took to his social media website, Truth Social, yesterday to threaten subsidies to Musk’s companies. Musk then threatened to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which the country’s space agency, NASA, has come to depend on heavily to ferry cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station on a regular basis. Musk later walked back this threat. NASA is said to have few viable alternatives to the Musk-owned company, as many of SpaceX’s competitors are still catching their technology up with the company. Joining Larry to discuss how and why NASA relies so heavily on private contractors is Kenneth Chang, science reporter for The New York Times. With files from the Associated Press.
