Today's Guest Dr. Todd Forman is a family physician and musician hailing from Long Beach, California. He played saxophone and keyboard in the band Sublime during the bands formative years while also attending Harvard University. He then attended medical school at UCLA and completed his residency at Santa Monica Medical Center. After marrying his dermatologist's wife, Kristen, he joined the faculty at Keck USC Department of Family Medicine with his mother, Dr. Jean Forman. Dr. Jean has the distinction of being the oldest graduate of Keck USC Medical School in history and the second oldest medical school graduate in the United States. Dr. Todd and Dr. Jean started their private practice, Forman Family Medicine in Newport Beach, California in 2006. Further, Dr. Todd has continued his musical journey touring with the band Sublime with Rome in 2009 to 2011 and playing and recording music with dozens of acts, including the Dirty Heads and Steel Pulse. He co-founded the Children's Music Supergroup, Jelly of the Month Club in 2011, promoting music education throughout Southern California schools over a decade. Currently, he's focused on his production company, the Moxie Brothers, with his partner, Adrian Young of No Doubt. Together, they have composed, produced, mixed, and performed dozens of records and scored two full-length movies. Today's Guest Jamie-Lynn Sigler has been acting and singing since the age of 7. She got her start in New York regional theater, and has since starred in over two dozen theatrical productions including "Annie," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Sound of Music," "The Wiz," and "Gypsy." In the summer of 2001, she starred in the touring production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Cinderella," playing the lead opposite Eartha Kitt. Jamie made her Broadway debut starring as Belle in Disney's Broadway production of "Beauty and the Beast" from October of 2002 through February 2003. Beyond her theatrical appearances, she starred as Meadow Soprano in the critically acclaimed HBO original series The Sopranos (1999). For her work on the show, she received the 1999 and 2000 Hollywood Reporter Young Star Awards for Best Young Actress in a Dramatic Television Series and both 2001 and 2002 ALMA nominations. She also has a SAG Award for The Sopranos (1999) Best Ensemble Cast. Jamie is taking Kesimpta (ofatumumab) for her RMS. As with any medication, there can be risks. Doctors will test patients for active Hepatitis B infection, as people with Hepatitis B shouldn’t take KESIMPTA. Today's Guest President of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, Connie was educated at Johns Hopkins and New York University, she obtained her PhD in 2004 from Lynn University to have a bigger voice for family caregivers. Connie never expected her doctoral research to uncover the high prevalence of family health situations and concomitant caregiving with detrimental academic effects upon children in Palm Beach County. Her broad background in healthcare and dedication to diminishing caregiver isolation and struggles led to the 1998 establishment of what is now the American Association for Caregiving Youth. It includes the Caregiving Youth Project, the first US program to support the hidden population of child caregivers. Her dream is for all family caregivers to be honored and respected but especially youth for their contributions to family and to society; no child in the US should have to drop out of school because he or she has to care for a family member. In June of 2009, Connie was awarded a lifetime Ashoka Fellowship and in October 2009 she became one of 10 Purpose Prize winners, a national endeavor honoring persons over 60 years of age who initiated an innovative solution for social change. In September 2010 The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association presented her with The Distinguished Alumna Award. In 2011 AACY won the Palm Beach County Medical Society’s Heroes in Medicine Award for Community Outreach and later that year Connie was named a Woman of Grace by Bethesda Hospital Foundation. He also provided lead vocals for the bands The Gracious Few and The Hiwatts. Martin was born in Elgin, Illinois. His father worked for a salt company and the family moved to San Antonio, Texas when he was 10. They subsequently moved to Mercer Island, Washington near Seattle when Martin was 15. He and drummer Scott Mercado set out to start a band in 1990. Candlebox was formed in 1991 after guitarist Peter Klett and bassist Bardi Martin joined them. They gained a Billboard 200 top 10 hit in 1993 with their self-titled debut album, released by Maverick Records. The album's success was largely due to the single "Far Behind", a song written about two of Martin's friends who suffered heroin overdoses, including Andrew Wood of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The single reached number 18 on the US Hot 100 and was a top 10 hit in both the US Modern Rock and US Mainstream Rock charts. Today's Episode Dr. Raj is joined by Todd Keitz of the “Caregiving Insights” podcast to talk with father/daughter duo Alex and John about their joint adventures working together as EMTs in Connecticut. Today’s Guest Alex is about to finish up her Neuroscience degree at Middlebury College with a minor in Theatre. During her time as a student, Alex took off a semester to work as a medical assistant at a local hospital in Vermont to help alleviate the staffing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside of medicine, Alex performs with an improv comedy troupe and an acapella group on campus and has starred in the occasional short film. We often hear of a child following a parent’s footsteps by going into the family business or going into the same line of work. That being said, it's probably less likely you've heard of a daughter or son becoming an EMT because their dad was an EMT - and following in her dad's footsteps she also became an EMT at the age of 16. John spent his professional career in advertising and marketing in the US and Europe, but always had an interest in medicine and first aid. It wasn't until his kids were in high school that he felt he could take the time to become an EMT. Fortunately, the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Wilton, CT sponsors two EMT classes a year for its residents. John completed the course and became a licensed EMT and NREMT in December of 2016. He went on to volunteer for the next six years including the intense period during the COVID-19 lockdown in the New York area. John also served as Secretary and President of the Wilton Corps of EMTs. Training young EMTs is a central objective to WVAC, and unlike many services, the group accepts EMTs as young as 16 years old. Last year, John and his wife bought a small inn on Cape Cod and had to leave WVAC. He will never forget how much he learned and grew through serving as an EMT including the notable life experience and sharing several shifts on the ambulance with his daughter Alex. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Dr. Rudy Tanzi about his work in Alzheimer's Disease research, his acronym SHIELD for evading its progression, and how his background as a musician has intersected with this work. Today’s Guest Dr. Tanzi is the Vice-Chair of Neurology, Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Co-Director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health, and Co-Director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanzi received his BS (microbiology) and BA (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his PhD (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi co-discovered the first Alzheimer’s disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund Alzheimer’s Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation. He also discovered the Wilson’s disease gene and other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi’s team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional neural-glial; cell culture organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer’s-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks in vitro, and first to definitively show that amyloid plaques directly cause neurofibrillary tangles - and also made drug screening for AD faster and more cost-effective. Using this system, Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now seeking FDA approval. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a role for infection in AD pathology. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund Research Leadership Group and numerous advisory and editorial boards. He has been named to TIME magazine’s list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World. Dr. Tanzi is a New York Times bestselling author who has co-authored the books Decoding Darkness, and the bestsellers Super Brain, Super Genes, and The Healing Self with Dr. Deepak Chopra. Dr. Tanzi has hosted several shows on public television, regularly appears on television news programs, and has testified to Congress on both Alzheimer’s disease and brain health.
