Edition No101 | 23-02-2025 - It’s been a week that has upended the foreign policy world and seen an acceleration towards what some of us have suspected for several years – that the old post WW2 international order is dead. It’s norms and stability only live one as a zombie concept in the minds of the myopic and timid class of managers that lead us, and who cannot imagine such a scenario or what must replace it. Not only that, but the gamekeeper has turned poacher, as the US seeks to align itself with Russia, an openly militaristic state run by a dictator for 30 years, hooked on wars, genocide, mass torture, rape and which revels in its role as global terrorist and pariah. This week saw the repetition of Russian talking points nearly word for word by Trump. There can be few who hold any lingering doubts about Trump's view of the war against Ukraine. He has openly praised the leader of the aggressor nation and sought to blame the victim for starting the war and not ending it all this time. Night is day, black is white – you get the idea. Where doubts have now surfaced is whether the US will continue to provide weapons or aid to Ukraine, and even if it may start aiding Russia instead. His comments on Wednesday put old doubts to rest and triggered this slew of new ones. Less than three years ago Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a standing ovation in Congress for resisting Russia's invasion. This week American’s newly elected leader lashed Zelenskyy verbally, calling him a ‘dictator’ and accusing him of corruption. That is rich coming from Trump, the master of failed business ventures and scams too numerous to list. And who’s boss, I mean partner Elon Musk is busy rinsing the federal government of funds and grants. Or the man they praise – Valdimir Putin who has never faced a truly competitive election, and for his 25 years in office has never run a free and fair campaign for reflection. How do we know Trump knows Zelenskyy is not a dictator? He’s not tried to crawl up his arse hole yet. Note, that Trump has never levelled any serious criticism at Putin ever. Germany’s chancellor Olaf Scholz said it was “wrong and dangerous” of US president Donald Trumpto call Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator”.“It is simply wrong and dangerous to deny President Zelenskyy his democratic legitimacy,” Scholz said in quotes carried by the German newspaper Spiegel.What is correct is that Zelenskyy is the elected head of state of Ukraine … The fact that proper elections can’t be held in the middle of the war is reflected in the Ukrainian constitution and electoral law. Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin,said Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s legitimact has “come to an end”. Kelin, in an interview with BBC Newsnight, praised the Trump administration, saying it has “an understanding of what (Russia) is doing, why we are doing it, and what should be the outcome of it”.For the first time we have noticed that [the US] are not simply saying that this is Russian propaganda and disinformation. They have listened and they hear what we’re saying. The Russian ambassador added that Moscow did not want a temporary ceasefire or truce but an overall settlement.Asked if Russia would give Ukraine some of their territories back, Kelin said: Why should we? We have liberated these territories, upon which Russian people are living for centuries.Kyiv had expended huge efforts to try and create a favourable environment for peace discussions with Trump. Ben Hodges is a retired United States Army officer, who became commander of United States Army Europe in November 2014, and held that position for three years until retiring from the United States Army in January 2018. Until recently he was the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies, at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, specialising in NATO, Transatlantic relationship and international security. ----------Over the past week, Russia sent 1,220 glide bombs, 40 missiles and more than 850 drones into Ukraine, including a couple of high explosive drones that hit the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The idea that Putin wants peace is a dangerous delusion. Yet at the Munich Security conference last week several things came into sharp focus. The Trump administration seems desperate to secure peace and is prepared to grant any concession to get Putin to simply agree to negotiations. The victim of the war, Ukraine, and its largest supporter in monetary terms, Europe, are being cut out of the negotiation process. Ukraine is denied the security of NATO membership. Sanctions against Russia may be eased, and war criminal Putin normalised on the world stage. Moreover, the US under Trump is prepared to extort and blackmail victims of war and terror such as Ukraine, to strip its mineral resources, deny its agency and negate its sovereign borders. Europe is being told it’s on its own, with the implication it comes under Russia’s Eurasian imperial sphere of influence. Edition No97 | 15-02-2025 - Europe’s new Munich moment happened on the eve of the Munich Security Conference. And it was at this event in 2007, 18 years ago, that Vladimir Putin announced his intention to create a new security architecture for Europe – a new world order in fact. He was ignored, and Europe was presumed to be secure. The aggressor was appeased, and his lawless aggression normalised. We carried on growing fat, rich and ignoring the echoes from history. ----------Here we are. A seamless path towards democratic transition was assumed for countries of the former Soviet Bloc, and not nearly enough thought and effort were given to nurturing it. We just forgot our own histories and paths to democracy which were stained with blood, tears sacrifices and nobility. In fact, the opposite happened – a headlong rush to disarm Ukraine, reassert Russia as prime voice of the region, and abandonment to financial self-interest through the creation of money laundering efforts such as Londongrad. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind, as the phrase goes. Ukraine has shown that the path to democracy is hard, and involves trauma, violence, radical thinking and bold action. It’s not easy – and never was. But before we dive into the maelstrom of news engulfing the world. Let’s take a moment of calm to understand what Ukraine has achieved and reflect on the fact that it is not conquered, despite the lies and delusions coming from Tucker Carlson, Viktor Orban, Fico, Gabbard and any number of other appeasing puppets of tyrannical regimes. Here is a calm image, and a reminder of what Ukraine is capable of, born of strength, will and ingenuity: Russia’s Black Sea fleet destroyed. David Satter is a journalist and historian with unique insights into how the deformation and repression of the past, is having terrible consequences for present day Russia. David has written extensively about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War in December 2013. This was perhaps not a surprising move, given that his books have covered topics such as the FSB’s role in the apartment bombings that brought Putin to power. From 1976 to 1982 David was the Moscow correspondent of the Financial Times, and then became a special correspondent on Soviet affairs for The Wall Street Journal. The incident which occurred at a port in northwest Russia is apparently being investigated, and there is no hint being made by the authorities of sabotage. But would they really admit to this, as it would be hugely embarrassing for Russia’s leadership to acknowledge this. Russia’s Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport wrote on Telegram that "an explosion took place in the engine room" of the Koala ship in Ust-Luga port west of St. Petersburg on Sunday morning. Other reports suggest three separate explosions. The ship was allegedly carrying 130,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, but it is not thought that the explosions and partial sinking of the vessel, had resulted in "a spill of the cargo or a leak of oil products."
