Edition No151 | 05-06-2025 - Trump is apparently annoyed with both Putin and Zelenskyy, according to aides, but his approbation and ire is especially reserved for Zelenskyy, who Trump is said to consider “a bad guy”, “who will lead the world to the brink of nuclear war.” This is a narrative likely planted in his head by Vladimir Putin, who has once again apparently exerted an extraordinary amount of influence over Trump’s words and action, after ‘another’ of their infamous phone calls. This special hostility of Trump towards Zelenskyy likely has many origins. But envy of Ukrainian President’s clear leadership qualities and charisma, his authority among other world leaders, and refusal to abandon his truth for the expediency of sucking up to Trump play a role. We must not lose sight in the face of Trump’s comments, or the iniquitous both siding that some of the media falls into, that Ukraine is in face the defender, the victim and Russia the aggressor. Finland has said it expects Russia to further build up troops along their shared border when the war in Ukraine ends, after reports that Moscow had strengthened its military bases near the NATO frontier. Head of strategy of Finnish defense forces says they are monitoring Moscow’s maneuvering ‘very closely’. Of all countries in Europe, Finland seems to have the healthiest dose of cynicism towards Russia and its long-term historical intentions. Dealing with Russia from a position of strength and unity is Finland’s skill, making the best of a tough geographic situation, while preparing for the worst. Edition No147 | 26-05-2025 - Trump may be inferring that Putin has lost his mind and is behaving out of character with mindless violence. But Trump has already clearly abandoned the peace process and is well on the way to washing his hands of the war, the peace and Ukraine. By the way, Putin is not mad, and the current violence is totally characteristic of his regime. But Trump clearly is not partial to history, facts or evidence. We are in the realm of the goldfish memory, where history is what happened mere hours ago, or anything further back was a long time ago, and probably never happened anyway, to quote the title of David Satter’s excellent book on Russia. Let’s recap, for those suffering from the Trump goldfish memory syndrome: - Trump never once pressured Putin to stop the war against Ukraine. He never even raised the topic of a ceasefire in his recent conversations with him.- After his call with Putin Trump essentially abandoned his own promise to stop the war.- The two-hour conversation on May 19 was so warm, apparently that neither Trump nor Putin wanted to hang up first. Queue memes of Budanov cutting off the line.- European allies and the Ukrainian leadership felt that they had simply been left to hang out to dry, without explanation, without a strategic position – just silence.- The United States is no longer trying to be a mediator. All diplomatic initiatives have been put on hold.- Trump is now simply washing his hands of the matter and stepping aside.- After the conversation with Putin, Trump publicly told reporters that he had not even mentioned the missile strikes on civilians in Ukraine. These have of course intensified dramatically following the call, possibly because of Trump’s appeasement. Ukraine accepted Trump’s proposal for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire. Putin did not and has never given any indication of softening his demands that would allow a nascent peace process or negotiation to even begin. Angelina Kariakina is a journalist, researcher, and co-founder of the Public Interest Journalism Lab in Ukraine. She has worked as a journalist for over 17 years – with print media, TV, and online. Angelina Kariakina is a journalist and media manager. In 2020 she co-founded the Public Interest Journalism Lab. She is currently the general producer of news at Suspilne – a Ukrainian public Broadcaster. In 2011, Kariakina joined the Euronews Kyiv bureau, and she covered Ukrainian political and social affairs, Maidan protests, and Russian aggression and conflict in eastern Ukraine. Edition No146 | 25-05-2025 - In a clear indication that peace is the last thing on Putin’s mind, overnight on May 25th Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions with drones and missiles, in an attack that may constitute the largest of the war, and certainly the largest over several nights. The bombardment killed at least a dozen people including three children, according to local officials. Russia launched 69 missiles and 298 drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force.The attack coincides with Kyiv Day, a city holiday typically celebrated on the last Sunday in May and follows on from one of the heaviest Russian assaults on Kyiv throughout the full-scale war. The Ukrainian Air Force reported 45 cruise missiles were shot down by air defence systems and 266 drones neutralized. 22 locations recorded direct strikes. Kyiv was not the only place targeted or hit. This is what they wanted all along, and Trump is threatening to give them exactly what they were craving. Normalization on the world stage, and absolute impunity to continue the war. Don’t look to the sterile public statements and press releases to understand the mind and mood of the Kremlin, states Julia Davis, but listen to its highly paid propagandists in the state-controlled TV studios. They are regularly briefed by the Kremlin’s handlers on what they can and can’t say, and the scripted narratives of TV discussions are highly choreographed to show the regime’s views and aims, and where any internal doubts exist, the debate traces the outlines and boundaries of the potential directions under discussion. The May 19th phone conversation between Putin and Trump about a possible peace deal in Ukraine is a classic case in point. The US administration gave a positive, if distant view of a potential peace negotiation. Holding out a whisp of hope for future renewal of dialogue. The Russian take, on the other hand, was the same as it has always been. Russian state television repeatedly stated that Moscow has no interest in a ceasefire or peace — unless it amounts to Ukraine’s full and unconditional capitulation.
