6/20/2025

6/19/2025
Today, we begin the show with another update on the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee’s plans to cut $87 million from the UW System budget. After Todd broke that news on Monday night and constituents called their representatives to complain, the item was removed from Tuesday’s agenda. The chaos continues, as today, the JFC cancelled their meeting in its entirety. At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media Political Editor and Founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer joins us to break down the latest statewide news. He and Todd begin with more implications of this cancelled JFC meeting. They also cover Dan’s latest article with his ten takeaways from last weekend’s WisDems convention. Growing And Preserving Rural EMS with James Small (Hour 1)

6/17/2025
Last night, Todd heard from his sources that the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee was planning to announce an $87 million cut from the UW System budget today. Late this morning, the JFC removed this item from the agenda, likely due to calls from constituents after the agenda leaked. Remember, if you don’t like something your representative is doing, contact their office and let them know! You just might make a positive difference. At the bottom of the hour, we are joined by James Small, the Rural EMS Outreach Program Manager at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. This relatively new program seeks to increase the reliability and sustainability of emergency medical services in rural areas around Wisconsin. EMS is handled by local governments, and young people who could fill those roles increasingly move out to bigger cities. James walks us through how his department is working to address these challenges. Protecting Our Pollinators with Amy Barrilleaux (Hour 2)

6/16/2025
We begin today’s second hour with another check-in from Wisconsin Watch Reporter Tom Kertscher. He joins us to share his reporting on the Wisconsin Democratic Convention that was held near Wisconsin Dells this weekend. One of his biggest takeaways is that Democrats agree that MAGA authoritarianism is a real threat to our democracy, but there is little if any agreement on how to address the issue. Tom also shares his latest fact briefs, which are short fact checks on things our elected officials claim. At the bottom of the hour, Clean Wisconsin Communications Director Amy Barrilleaux joins us to celebrate National Pollinator Month! Today, Amy talks about common chemicals and pesticides that hurt pollinators and what we can do to reduce exposure. Amy also hosts Clean Wisconsin’s podcast, The Defender! Once Again, There Is No Place For Violence In Politics. (Hour 1)

6/16/2025
Over the weekend, a Minnesota man assassinated former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman. He also murdered her husband and injured some other political targets. According to Channel 3000, the suspect, Vance Boelter, had a list of approximately 70 politicians he intended to kill, including Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin. Much like with last year’s attempt on Donald Trump’s life, MAGA pundits immediately took to social media to claim that the assassin is a Democrat. Todd takes some time to set the record straight. According to people in Boelter’s life, he is a Trump supporter, but regardless of that, there is no place for violence in our political system. MAGA leadership consistently callously politicizes tragedies like this, weaponizing them for political purposes before addressing the humanity of these situations. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys returns for her weekly Joint Finance Committee update. After addressing the horrible violence of this last weekend, she dives into one of the most disappointing items being shot down by the state legislature: the lack of funding for the Universities of Wisconsin. As longtime listeners will know, this issue is very close to Todd’s heart. Sen. Roys agrees that the continued closures of UW campuses do not appear to be in our state’s best interest. After that, Todd and Sen. Roys move to a broader political discussion following the weekend’s Democratic Party of Wisconsin Convention. She is a massive Diet Coke fan, and more importantly, the Northeast Wisconsin Bureau Chief for Civic Media News. In addition to her news duties, she hosts NEWisco Weekend, an excellent magazine-style program that rounds up the latest and greatest community events in our state. 6/11/2025
After some more conversation on whether or not Governor Evers should run again, Todd asks us What’s Worse: having a funeral or not having a funeral? We take some calls and texts with strange funeral stories. At the bottom of the hour, we address the big parade happening this weekend– but wait, it’s not the one you’re thinking of. While the national news is talking about President Trump’s military parade in DC this weekend, we’re choosing to focus on something much closer to home. Downtown Manager of Downtown Baraboo, inc. Seth Taft joins us to talk about Baraboo’s Big Top Parade! This Saturday in downtown Baraboo, you can join the festivities and celebrate the surprisingly deep and artistic history of circuses. 6/11/2025
This Wednesday, we are joined by our typical midweek guests, Pat Kreitlow of Mornings with Pat Kreitlow and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project. They weigh in on one of the nation’s biggest stories: ICE deportations and protests. The Trump administration’s continued illegal and unethical mass deportations of innocent people are escalating to include children who are in compliance with ICE regulations. At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media Political Editor and Founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer returns to drop a bombshell. At the bottom of the hour, we look through some of Brian VanHooker’s latest work at Cracked.com. Most notably, he’s taken up the task of finding some of the funniest adult jokes from The Muppet Show. What Really Happened In Los Angeles This Weekend (Hour 2)

6/9/2025
Now that it’s June, we’ve hit one of the most popular wedding seasons of the year. This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: forgetting a birthday or forgetting an anniversary? We take your calls and texts on which one is more likely to upset your friends and family. Breaking news: musician Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone passed away today at the age of 82. We celebrate his accomplishments by playing some of his music. At the bottom of the hour, Todd returns to the national headlines and what they mean for us here in Wisconsin. This past weekend, protests in Los Angeles became violent and President Trump called in the national guard. This event may appear completely divorced from our state, but Todd believes that bigger things are happening. Over the weekend, a Wisconsin sports legend passed away. Jerry Petitgoue of Cuba City coached basketball in our state for 60 years, ending his career with an incredible record of 1,027-249. WRCO and WRCE Station Manager Phil Nee has had many chances to observe and interview Coach Petitgoue over the years. Phil joins us today to share an interview he had with the coach in 2018 and celebrate his impact on Wisconsin high school sports. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys joins us for another update on the Joint Finance Committee’s state budget negotiations. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen much movement. Democrats are proposing increased funding for education and childcare, but Republicans staunchly oppose these measures despite our approximately $4 million budget surplus. Rural Republican-led districts are among those suffering the most from our state’s lack of funding in these areas.
