To begin today’s show, Todd addresses some listener comments. Last week as we approached Independence Day, many of you expressed that celebration felt inappropriate for last weekend in light of the Trump administration’s horrendous acts. While Todd still believes that we should focus on striving for a better America, he doesn’t want to downplay the severity of current events. This may well be one of the darkest moments in American history since the civil war. Ultimately, while policy decisions being made right now are dangerous and deadly, the rhetoric may be even more harmful to our country. The dehumanization of minorities and escalating fear may lead to a day where citizens are too afraid to vote or otherwise make their voices heard. We cannot let MAGA take away our hope. At the bottom of the hour, Wisconsin Watch Reporter Tom Kertscher joins us to share his latest fact brief on common claims about President Trump’s new federal budget. People across the political spectrum have lots to say about this new budget, and Tom is here to help us sort out the truth. We round out our first hour with a discussion on one of Wisconsin’s less-loved Toms: Tom Tiffany. His latest social media posts continue to be off-base. After a brief recap of the holiday weekend’s festivities, Todd turns to a more somber topic: the deadly floods in Texas. As of today’s show, approximately 90 people have been marked either dead or missing. Unfortunately, many of these deaths could have been preventable. Due to the staffing cuts to the National Weather Service by DOGE earlier this year, there were not enough people on duty during this natural disaster to punctually warn the citizens of the area. Back here in Madison, Wisconsin, several homes of the members of the UW System Board of Regents have been vandalized with pro-Palestinian messages. Similarly, several businesses along State Street have been vandalized with messages stating that it’s time for “direct action” against fascists, with the “A” in action replaced by the anarchy symbol. In Todd’s view, the destruction of property and implied violence of this rhetoric is unacceptable. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy in our country, but crossing the line into violence can turn people away and harm the credibility of an otherwise important movement. Today, two new budgets have officially passed. At about 1:30 this morning, Governor Evers signed our state budget into law with a series of line item vetoes. Similarly, President Trump’s budget reconciliation bill passed shortly before our show began today, with plans to sign it into law tomorrow. Todd begins with a focus on the federal budget and the dire consequences it will have for people all over the country.
