Now that we’ve gotten to know the doctors and patient consultants at the Quatela Center, we’re taking some time to talk about a range of plastic surgery procedures. On our last episode we discussed one of the more uncommon procedures, Labiaplasty. This time, one of the more common procedures, Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can change the size, shape, and structure of your nose. To talk more about the procedure, we’re joined by 2 specialists in facial plastic surgery - Doctors Vito Quatela and Heather Lee.

Now that we’ve gotten to know the doctors and patient consultants at the Quatela Center, we’re going to spend the next episodes talking about a range of plastic surgery procedures. And we start with one of the more uncommon procedures called Labiaplasty. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that around 10,000 labiaplasty procedures are done each year. For a sense of comparison, the same data shows that, annually, about 215,000 people get rhinoplasties and around 300,000 breast augmentations are done. To talk more about the procedure, we’re joined by Doctor Ashley Amalfi and her Patient Consultant Melissa.

A 2019 Washington Post article showed some interesting numbers about medical schools. That year, for the first time, women were slightly ahead of men in terms of medical school enrollment – according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. But when you look at the number of women pursuing surgical careers from about the same period, the gap between men and women is much greater with men dominating that part of the field. Within plastic surgery, a 2017 study showed the ratio of male to female surgeons was approximately 5 to 1. A smaller gap than in other surgical specialties, but sill surprising when you consider the fact that women make up the vast majority of plastic surgery patients. The Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery has a balanced surgical team consisting of 2 men – Drs. Vito Quatela and William Koenig and 2 women – Drs. Ashley Amalfi and Heather Lee.

There are plenty of misconceptions about plastic surgery. Dr. William Koenig has probably heard most of them. In a place like Rochester, where we often don’t seem to get enough nice weather days to spend outdoors, it might lead you to believe that summer months would be a bad time to have a procedure done. But as we hear from Dr. Koenig, plastic surgery has no season.

In recent years, the surgical team at The Quatela center has doubled. Dr. Vito Quatela actively recruited his former fellow and student, Dr. Heather Lee, who joined the practice in 2017. In 2019, Dr. William Koenig became aware of another rising star in the plastic surgery world, Dr. Ashley Amalfi. The need to expand the team at was due, in large part, to the success Drs. Koenig and Quatela were having with creating uplifting experiences that changed their patients’ lives.

For about the last decade and a half, the surgical team at Rochester’s Quatela Center was a duo – with Doctors Vito Quatela and William Koenig handling all the procedures. Over the past few years, that team has doubled with the addition of Dr. Ashley Amalfi – who we’ll meet in our next episode – and Dr. Heather Lee – who did her fellowship under Dr. Quatela. It was early in their relationship that Dr. Quatela realized this was one student he couldn’t let get away. And a young doctor was about to begin her career under the wing of a celebrated plastic surgeon.

On the last episode, we got to hear from Dr. Vito Quatela about his beauty for life philosophy. This time, we’re one on one with Dr. Quatela’s longtime practice partner - Dr William Koenig. Dr. Koenig takes a holistic approach to his own life and bring those ideas and principles into the relationships he builds with his patients.
