For a second straight night, the Flyers scored the game’s opening goal, but went to the first intermission trailing 2-1, and again, the New York team never looked back. Back-to-back regulation losses to division foes now have the Flyers falling further from Stanley Cup Playoff contention. The biggest news in the NHL, however, is a huge trade between the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks which will send Mikko Rantanen to the Canes for Martin Necas and Jack Drury. Matvei Michkov has fallen out of favor over the last few weeks, falling behind Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson and even Dustin Wolf in the Calder Trophy race. But a recent hot streak has re-opened the possibility for The Mad Russian to get back into the conversation. Similarly, the Flyers looked to be trending towards the basement with a 5-10-2 stretch from December 5th through January 9th. But with 4 wins and 9 points in their last 5 games, the Orange & Black are right back in it. It wasn’t pretty, but the Philadelphia Flyers worked hard to secure a victory over the Devils in New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. A low event game that only saw 32 shots on goal and over 50 total blocks, the Flyers PK & PP stepped up to beat one of the best teams in the east. The first period of Thursday’s matchup with the Islanders was marred by a questionable hit that knocked Ryan Poehling out of the game, and the emotions after that put the Flyers at a 1-0 deficit after 20 minutes. But Philadelphia responded with a 3-goal middle frame, and an 11-6 shot advantage highlighted by some huge setups from Travis Konecny. John Tortorella and his staff have been behind the Philadelphia Flyers’ bench for 209 games, as of Tuesday night’s matchup with the Columbus Blue Jackets. And while the Orange & Black have managed to cycle in some new, young players in that time, much of the lineup has been here for at least a part of Torts’ two-and-a-half seasons. The Philadelphia Flyers hadn’t won more than 2 straight games since the end of November, and that streak continues after a shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Despite showing signs of life in the 3rd period, the Philadelphia Flyers lost their fourth straight game to open 2025, falling to the Dallas Stars on Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back, as the Orange & Black put up little fight in the first 40 minutes of Ed Snider Legacy night. Bill & Steve break down the loss, evaluate Sam Ersson’s return from injury, and discuss if this is a sign of what’s to come in the second half.

The Philadelphia Flyers played their 41st game of the season on Tuesday night, marking the end of the first half of the 2024-25 season. Travis Konecny is on pace for 41 goals, Matvei Michkov has flashed greatness and the goaltenders have been the worst in the league. It came down to some late heroics by Joseph Woll but Toronto was able to hold on for the regulation win in the Flyers first game back in Philly since December 21. Where is this Philadelphia Flyers season going? By points-percentage they’re 23rd in the league, 10th from the bottom. They’re also 2 points out of the last Stanley Cup Playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Charlie & Bill step back on a snowy Monday to discuss how they think the 2nd half of the season will play out, and how John Tortorella’s handling of Matvei Michkov, Sean Couturier and the goaltenders could come into play down the stretch.

Ivan Fedotov was a bit of an adventure between the pipes for the first 20 minutes, but was mostly solid in the 2nd and 3rd, earning the Flyers a point and forcing overtime, stopping 22 of 24 Toronto shots in regulation. Unfortunately, the Flyers couldn’t hold the Leafs off 3v3 and after a Matvei Michkov 1-on-1 chance, Toronto came back down the ice and scored off the rush for the win. The Philadelphia Flyers 3 goalies have combined for a save-percentage below .880. While the Orange and black don’t have designs on a Stanley Cup Playoff run, the idea is to play competitive games and that’s nearly impossible with the worst goaltending in the NHL. Charlie, Kelly & Bill discuss if something should be done to replace Aleksei Kolosov and/or the other netminders who haven’t been much better. Plus, a look into the rumors surrounding the Vancouver Canucks and whether the Flyers should be interested in JT Miller or Elias Pettersson.

Tyson Foerster put the Flyers up 1-0 only 21 seconds into the first period, but it was Aleksei Kolosov who was the biggest story of the game, allowing a number of soft goals in an otherwise fairly well played loss for Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Flyers closed out 2024 with a decisive win over the San Jose Sharks and Macklin Celebrini. Matvei Michkov is officially back, scoring a goal and picking up an assist for his 10th career multi-point game to break a 7-game slump, but it wasn’t enough to outscore the LA Kings on Sunday night.
