Even in a highly uncertain business environment, companies that build new businesses and develop new offerings, processes, and business models are better able to capture growth opportunities and hedge against disruption. Our recent survey of more than 1,000 companies around the world reflected this, with the largest share of respondents identifying the ability to innovate as their most important strategic factor for generating growth over the coming 12 months.
To discuss the survey and talk about the innovation activities top performers are focusing on today, Sean Brown is joined by Rebecca Doherty, Matt Banholzer, and Clayton O’Toole. Rebecca co-leads our Strategic Growth and Innovation practice and is a partner in our San Francisco office. She works extensively with health care, industrial, and technology clients to define and execute growth road maps. Matt co-leads our Global Strategic Growth and Innovation practice with Rebecca and is a senior partner in our Chicago office. He also sits on the leadership team of our business-building practice, and serves organizations on innovation strategy across a range of sectors, including energy, materials, and agriculture. Clayton is a leader in our Strategy & Corporate Finance and Consumer Tech and Media practices in North America and is a partner based in our Minnesota office. He serves a wide range of clients including media organizations, sports leagues; food, apparel, and hardlines retailers; consumer packaged goods companies, and principal investors.

Peter Bogart-Johnson was one of Jane Street’s first program managers, and helped bring the art of PMing—where that “P” variously stands for “project,” “product,” or some blend of the two—to the company at large. He’s also a poet and the editor of a literary magazine. In this episode, Peter and Ron discuss the challenge of gaining trust as an outsider: how do you teach teams a new way of doing things while preserving what’s already working? The key, Peter says, is you listen; a good PM is an anthropologist. They also discuss how paying down technical debt isn’t something you do instead of serving customers; what Jane Street looks for in PM candidates; and how to help teams coordinate in times of great change.

In this episode, Christian Pichnick, co-founder and CEO of Wandelbots, discusses the future of robotics and automation, the challenges and opportunities for tech startups in Europe, and the impact of AI on manufacturing. He emphasizes the need for a shift in mindset towards innovation and the importance of having a clear vision for the future. The conversation also touches on the macroeconomic changes affecting the tech ecosystem and strategies for founding successful companies in Europe.
Christian Piechnick
Christian Piechnick is the CEO and co-founder of Wandelbots, a Dresden-based robotics startup revolutionizing industrial automation through its hardware-agnostic NOVA operating system, launched in 2024 to simplify robot programming using modern IT tools like Python. A former TU Dresden researcher in adaptive software architectures, he pivoted Wandelbots from hardware solutions like the TracePen to a software-first strategy in 2023, prioritizing scalable automation platforms. Under his leadership, the company secured over €113 million in funding from investors including Microsoft, Siemens, and Insight Partners, establishing partnerships with NVIDIA and 3M to integrate AI capabilities. Recognized as Germany’s "Newcomer of the Year" in 2020, Piechnick aims to democratize robotics by enabling non-experts to deploy industrial robots across sectors like manufacturing and food production. His vision positions Wandelbots as a global leader in accessible automation, challenging traditional robotics paradigms while fostering Dresden’s emergence as a tech innovation hub.

Anh describes a transformative collaboration experience while building multiple websites for a client. Over time, his team recognized significant commonalities between projects and saw the opportunity to create reusable components for future work. However, they faced resistance when trying to shift the client's mindset from short-term project delivery to long-term product thinking. The business stakeholders remained focused on immediate project completion rather than investing in sustainable, reusable solutions.
Anh's approach to leading this change involved presenting concrete evidence from previous projects to demonstrate the tangible benefits of component reusability. Rather than just proposing the idea theoretically, they suggested implementing reusable components immediately within the current project, showing rather than just telling. His strategy centered on providing clear evidence of benefits and demonstrating achievability, making the transition from project to product mindset more tangible and less risky for the client.
In this episode, we refer to the book “From Project to Product” by Mik Kersten.
Self-reflection Question: How might you help your stakeholders see beyond immediate deliverables to recognize the long-term value of sustainable practices and reusable solutions?
