Encore: Independence Day Playlist: Music from singers who were in successful groups and then became hit solo artists

7/8/2016
For the first time in our 280-show history, there will be no special guests. Host Dan J Kroll will go solo for the entire hour. Perhaps he’s taking this whole “Independence Day” theme a little too far. But don’t worry — he’ll be kept company by some of the greatest singers of our time. This week, Kroll Call marks the Independence Day holiday with a special hour of music. Dan will be playing songs by artists who got their start as part of well-known groups but then broke off on their own to become successful solo artists. Think the Beatles, the Supremes, and even Destiny’s Child. But the list of artists who went solo after being part of a successful group runs surprisingly long — so long that it is impossible to get to every one in the course of an hour-long show. So we hope listeners will embrace this week’s show as the start of a new, annual Kroll Call tradition — and if your favorite group-members-turned-solo-artists aren’t included this year, we’ll get them next time!

The hottest songs of summers past - Part 2

7/1/2016
As has been the tradition for holidays past, Kroll Call is celebrating the long Fourth of July holiday weekend with one of our music playlist specials. We kicked off the summer of 2016 with part one of our look at songs that were hits in summers past. Because there were so many summer songs to choose from, we decided to create a special two-part edition. This episode of Kroll Call features more of the songs that you were listening to on the beach, humming in the swimming pool, or whistling along to in the mountains. So grab a snack and sit back and relax while you sing along to the hottest songs of summers past.

The hottest songs of summers past

5/27/2016
While the calendar may disagree — and we’re pretty sure that the groundhog can’t be trusted — to many people, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. And who are we to argue with an early start to summer? br As has been the tradition for holidays past, Kroll Call is celebrating the unofficial start of summer with one of our music playlist specials. In the past, we’ve rediscovered lost hits of the 80s and 90s, grooved to the hits of Motown, found out which ear worms were stuck in our Kroll Call team’s heads, and dodged evil twins as we listened to songs that became popular thanks to appearances on soap operas. br This time around, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the biggest hits of summers past. You know, the songs that you were listening to on the beach, humming in the swimming pool, or whistling along to in the mountains. So grab a snack and sit back and relax while you sing along to the hottest songs of summers past.

Encore: Scott Turner Schofield and Robert Palmer Watkins

5/20/2016
Award-winning actor Scott Turner Schofield (SKO-feeld) feels his purpose in life is to inspire Hollywood, your school, your job, and your family to embrace transgender people. He’ll share that gift on this week’s Kroll Call as he discusses the so-called “Bathroom Bills” that require individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds to the gender listed on their birth certificate. He also says he “can’t wait to tell you why I think bathroom bills = best thing to happen to the #LGBTQ community yet.” Then, changing topics ever so slightly, Robert Palmer Watkins, another of daytime’s promising newcomers, gives us a look into his world, a world that includes acting, singing, and a little danger in the form of rock climbing and surfing. We’ll talk musical theatre, his role on ABC’s General Hospital, and much more.

Adina Howard and Silk

2/26/2016
In 1993, R&B quintet Silk cooed melodically about licking you up and down — but only until you said stop. “Freak Me” rocketed to the top of the charts and was followed by a series of best-selling singles, including “If You”, “Meeting In My Bedroom”, and “Girl U For Me.” Now 23 years and 5 million albums later, the group that was discovered by Keith Sweat is back with their seventh studio LP and another hit single. The group’s original members share how it all began and how they plan to make a new generation of fans “Lose Control.” In 1995, Adina Howard burst onto the scene with her platinum-selling debut single “Freak Like Me.” It was something music fans hadn’t really experienced before: a sultry R&B singer who had no problem saying what she wanted any time of day. Now, Adina wears many hats; she’s a wife and mother, a Cordon Bleu trained chef, and a public speaker. Adina drops by to talk to Dan and reflects on her journey so far… and what’s still to come.
