Breaking down the Trojans roster updates, coaching staff moves and GM search

1/10/2025
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio to share their thoughts on how this Trojan football team has updated its roster and coaching staff in the early stages of preparation for the 2025 season. The big surprise came following USC's Vegas Bowl victory over Texas A&M, with offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. Pregnon had previously committed to the Senior Bowl before changing his mind and deciding to come back to play for the Trojans again. But at the last minute, as the portal closed for USC players 6 days after the bowl game, Pregnon changed his mind once again and jumped in the portal. The Trojans did get some help on the offensive line with Syracuse interior offensive lineman J'Onre Reed picking USC as his landing spot. The 6-foot-3, 316 pounder that likes to be known as 'Big General,' started 25 games at center over the last two years for the Orange. With Zach Hanson moving from tight ends coach to offensive line coach, head coach Lincoln Riley brought in Chad Savage from Colorado State to coach the tight ends and outside receivers. Savage was known for his recruiting with the Rams, rated the top recruiter in the Mountain West Conference by 247Sports over his three seasons. The guys also talk about USC's continued plans to hire a general manager to help Riley manage this roster in this crazy world of NIL, revenue sharing and of course the NCAA Transfer Portal. Helium Boys Podcast: USC’s thrilling Las Vegas Bowl comeback, bye to 2024 and a Trevino tattoo offer

12/31/2024
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys return to break down the Trojans' thrilling come-from-behind, last-second 35-31 victory over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl and discuss the perpetual redesign of the Trojans' roster for the 2025 season. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the epic finish to Kyle Ford's collegiate career before Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to focus primarily on his love affair with the Pop Tarts Bowl. That leads to a discussion about the Helium Boys traveling to cover or at least attend the 2025 Pop Tarts Bowl with Chris making the declaration that he will get a Pop Tarts Bowl tattoo in exchange for VIP access/treatment from the Pop Tarts Bowl. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip after the bowl game, starting with what positive developments happen before the team traveled to Las Vegas as Kamari Ramsey and Emmanuel Pregnon announced their returns to the team. Ja'Kobi Lane's wild string of six consecutive receptions going for touchdowns is included as are fellow receivers Makai Lemon and Ford. USC's young offensive line gets its kudos as well. On the flip side, Shotgun and Chris discuss another up-and-down performance by quarterback Jayden Maiava as well as the confidence of and surrounding Maiava. Then Shotgun goes on a rant about Lincoln Riley's Renaissance Man attempts that have led him to be mediocre in areas he previously thrived. Some younger players that didn't get opportunities in the bowl game and the chance in receiver rotations are also featured. A discussion about the NCAA transfer portal and the impact of both the losses and acquisitions the Trojans have made since the portal opened leads to some puzzled worries from the podcast collaborators. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the transfer portal as well as USC's searches for a linebacker coach and general manager. There are also questions about offseason momentum, offensive creativity and involvement of the tight end position. The Helium Boys also react to suggestions for the podcast for 2025 before the episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and an Overtime period focused on New Year's Eve traditions. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's season-closing win over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl

12/29/2024
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together giving their thoughts on USC's 35-31 victory over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl. he Trojans finished the season with a 7-6 record, going 4-5 in Big Ten play and bookending the season with victories over SEC opponents in Las Vegas, LSU in the opener and the Aggies to close it out. Coach Hyde has some strong opinions regarding the performance of the team in Vegas, including the play of quarterback Jayden Maiava. The young signal caller had a rough start to the game and made some ill-advised throws that led to a trio of interceptions, but he also showed great leadership late in the game helping the Trojans complete their 17-point comeback win. He also talks about some of the adjustments the USC defense made that led to three-straight stops in the second half, including a short field Aggie possession following a Maiava pick. He also has thoughts on how Lincoln Riley and the team handled themselves on the sidelines at Allegiant Stadium. Now that the 2024 season has come to a close, Coach Hyde looks ahead to what he feels the prospects for the future are and where he feels this program needs to add talent from the NCAA Transfer Portal. Branch Brothers to the portal and OL coach/OC Josh Henson leaves for Purdue

12/18/2024
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the latest roster and coaching staff movement with the NCAA Transfer Portal opening last week and player movement happening at record rates. The biggest portal news for USC happened on Tuesday with the Branch Brothers announcing they would be the latest Trojans to transfer. Wide receiver Zachariah Branch and safety Zion Branch both were slated to play major roles on this team in 2025, but neither will be wearing Cardinal and Gold going forward after they put their names in the NCAA Transfer Portal. With Zachariah's departure, all four five-star players recruited by Lincoln Riley from the 2022 and 2023 classes have now left the program: Branch, cornerback Domani Jackson, wide receiver Duce Robinson and quarterback Malachi Nelson. USC will also be on the market to hire a new offensive line coach and offensive coordinator with Josh Henson departing to join Barry Odom at Purdue. Henson will be the offensive coordinator for the Boilermakers but unlike his role at USC, he will be the primary play caller at Purdue. The guys talk about Riley's decision to hire from within, promoting tight ends coach Zach Hanson to be the Trojans new offensive line coach. They also discuss the other players that hit the portal and some of the candidates to fill the open linebacker coaching spot. CLICK HERE for 50% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! The Helium Boys are back to break down the changing Trojans roster following the December early signing period and the first two days of the NCAA transfer portal being open. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Chris having to rein Shotgun in after he goes on a wild tangent before the timer ever starts. They also discuss the breaking news that linebackers coach Matt Entz is leaving his post to become the new head coach at Fresno State. Helium Boys: USC falls to No. 5 Notre Dame, QB Miller Moss enters transfer portal

12/3/2024
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down the Trojans' deflating finish after pushing No. 5 Notre Dame in the Coliseum only to see the game slide through their hands in the final four minutes and the loss of fourth-year junior quarterback Miller Moss to the NCAA transfer portal. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the wildness of rivalry weekend and flag planting before Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to discuss the atmosphere in the Coliseum late in the fourth quarter when USC was driving to try to tie the game against at top five Irish club. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Action at the 1-yard line is discussed as is quarterback Jayden Maiava's performance through the first 55 minutes. The Helium Boys both have Quinten Joyner and Makai Lemon on their stock up section while the tight ends receive some love after being on the field on nearly every snap. Shotgun also brings up doghouse Ja'Kobi Lane, who played like a dawg becoming the first USC receiver with three touchdown catches against Notre Dame since Dwayne Jarrett nearly 20 years ago despite only getting 22 offensive snaps. On the flip side, Shotgun and Chris discuss everything falling apart late in the game and how 'handling pressure' saw its stock slide while the Trojans struggled to finish strong. The unfortunate end to Woody Marks' reception streak is also brought up as is the performance of the offensive line. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the impact of USC's wide receiver usage and the debate about signature wins. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his evaluation of the loss to Notre Dame and the disappointing 6-6 season for USC

12/2/2024
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together giving their end of the season evaluation following the Trojans 49-35 loss to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde is not happy with the way the season played out and really wants to see head coach Lincoln Riley do a detailed evaluation of his entire program this off-season, from his coaching philosophies to his staff, players and even how he interacts with boosters, the fans and the media. The guys start off talk about how this game played out, in similar fashion to the other losses the Trojans have endured in 2024. Coach Hyde wants to see more from this offense than throwing fade routes, a strategy that worked most of the game but then cost USC late with Notre Dame's game-sealing pick-6 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Coach says Riley is reluctant to run the football, thinks this team shouldn't be throwing it 50 times a game and when they do pass, he wants to see more variety by taking advantage of the middle of the field, something Riley avoided for most of the game against the Irish. Coach also wants to see improved line play, a lesson can be learned just from watching how Notre Dame dominated the trenches Saturday. On his season evaluation, Coach Hyde agrees with what some of the former players like Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley and Jake Olson have said on social media, this team doesn't have an identity and they should be better than they are in year three of a rebuild. Coach Hyde also feels like if the team continues to lose close games, that means it is more than just the players, it is the coaching. You can have bad fortune and lose game or two late, but not half of the schedule with most of the losses coming against lesser talented teams. Coach Hyde also talks about quarterback Miller Moss entering the transfer portal on Monday and what he would have liked to have seen for a better sendoff for the lifelong Trojan. Tunnel Vision: Pair of pick-6s doom the Trojans comeback bid against No. 5 Notre Dame

12/1/2024
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") are back for the final recap show of USC football's regular season, a 49-35 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Notre Dame. After playing an even first half, the Fighting Irish looked to be in control late in the game before the Trojans, down 7, had a first and 10 at the ND 21 with under 4 minutes on the clock with a chance to tie the game. Then Cornerback Christian Gray squashed the Trojans comeback dreams, snatching Jayden Maiava's pass out of the air before returning it 99-yards the other way. The guys talk about how this game was a microcosm of the Trojans entire season, with chances at success that ultimately ended in failure. USC played well enough to win in all three phases of the game, but couldn't bring it all together and make the plays to finish the game, a common theme throughout the season. Triple-Double Podcast: USC basketball teams head to Acrisure Classic in Palm Springs

11/27/2024
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the latest action from the USC women's and men's basketball teams, including the Women of Troy being harassed from start to finish by a Notre Dame team that showed USC has a lot of work it needs to do to reach the big expectations and aspirations for this season. Shotgun and Connor also look back at USC men's 80-69 victory over Grambling State that was a struggle throughout until the Trojans closed strong, finishing the game on a 13-2 run to improve to 5-1. The podcasters look at where the men and women's programs stand after three weeks of action with plenty of concerns still needing to be addressed by both teams as they try to jell with so many new faces on both rosters. Shotgun and Connor also preview the upcoming weekend of action in the desert as both teams travel to Palm Springs to play in the Acrisure Classic tournament. The Women of Troy try to shake the blues and get back on track against a couple of blue teams in Seton Hall and Saint Louis.
