Winter Storm Warning issued for Charlotte area ahead of snow and ice
1/10/2025
North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein declared a statewide state of emergency ahead of a winter storm that's expected to bring the first measurable snowfall to Charlotte in three years, warning residents of freezing temperatures and dangerous travel conditions.
"This storm will likely bring significant impacts from snow, sleet and freezing rain in different parts of the state," Stein said. "North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast, make sure they are prepared with what they need at home before Friday afternoon and stay home if possible as ice on the roadways will likely create dangerous driving conditions."
By 6 a.m., over 500 flights had been canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Hickory leaders discuss abolishing public housing authority board due to voucher concerns
1/8/2025
City leaders in Hickory discussed a proposal Tuesday night to abolish the board overseeing the Hickory Public Housing Authority. The move comes in response to years of complaints about inefficiencies in the organization, which Mayor Hank Guess says has left much-needed affordable housing resources underutilized.
"There’s a tremendous need for affordable housing, and 40% of it’s not being utilized, and so we’re looking at trying to increase that," Guess said.
The mayor explained that roughly 40% of the available housing vouchers in Hickory are not being used, creating a significant gap in housing assistance. Landlord Rebecca Robinson, who has experienced the issue firsthand, said something needs to change.

Matthews rejects NCDOT highway plan in favor of pedestrian-friendly downtown
1/6/2025
The Matthews Board of Commissioners voted last week to withdraw from a state highway project that would have expanded E. John Street to four lanes through the historic downtown area.
The decision halts the North Carolina Department of Transportation's planned expansion, which has faced opposition from many residents.
Town officials are instead pursuing a three-lane alternative they say better aligns with Matthews' vision for a pedestrian-friendly downtown.

These moments defined the life of Jimmy Carter
12/30/2024
Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, whose post-presidential work as a humanitarian set a modern standard for the kind of legacy presidents can craft after their time in the White House, has died at 100 years old.
"Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia," the Carter Center announced Sunday in a social media post.
His son Chip Carter said in a statement that he was a "hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love."
"My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs," Chip Carter said.

As deadline to clear homeless encampment nears, leaders say warming center still available
12/27/2024
People living in a homeless encampment in the city of Lancaster are expected to be moved from their current encampment on Friday. This notice is an extension from an original deadline originally set for a week earlier.
Currently, those living in the encampment can be seen under the bridge along the Catawba River heading into the city.
County officials say there is a warming center that’s been open since the beginning of December available for those in need. The center provides a bed, meals, and a shower for unhoused neighbors located 12 minutes from the encampment.
They also say it’s “hit or miss” that the resources at the center are used.
WCNC Charlotte spoke with people living in the encampment on Thursday. Some of them said the warming center isn’t a feasible option for them.

Rock Hill Schools confirms district-level 'reduction in force'
12/19/2024
Rock Hill Schools says it's making administrative changes that will go into effect at the start of the 2025 school year. Officials explain the changes are happening so they can provide more funding for school-level positions instead.
This change was initiated at the June school board meeting when a motion was made to “a proposed budget to restructure the district office organizational chart – so additional funding could be directed to schools and classrooms instead of the district office.”
Following that motion, the school board decided to start “reorganizing” and “reducing force.”
School officials say to stay within the budget, the school board will pull or eliminate funding from district-level positions and refocus them on school-level positions.

Mother of teen found dead in Lincoln County prays for peace, answers
12/18/2024
A grieving mother is speaking out after the body of her 16-year-old son was found along a quiet road in Lincoln County over the weekend.
Edwin Morales' family created a makeshift memorial in the area where his body was found along Whitehouse Drive in Lincolnton on Sunday. The family is left with so many unanswered questions and is trying to wrap their heads around what happened to him.
Surrounded by photos, flowers and candles of devotion, Yuridia Morales' love burns bright. She says Edwin was more than just her son, he was a brother, a cousin and a friend. He was a light to those around him and will be terribly missed.
"It's so that we can remember the person that he was," she said. "We pray that his soul can live in peace."
The 16-year-old's body was found about a mile from his home. Lincoln County detectives are investigating the case as a possible homicide. Now, his mother's faith is being tested as she stands in the middle of tragedy following his unexpected death.
